Long crazy story herebought this motor from a fella that had it sitting for quite a while in his yard, tried cranking it,turned slow, thought starter was shot, got a different starter an arco remanufactured, same thing, pop the plugs out cranks fast, put them in barely turns, but once in a great while(rarely turns normal) it will crank.I can start the motor with the rope tho.jumped the starter direct off of my truck, same thing.took starter off,had it checked by a rebuilder,we cleaned it,tested it,tested ok,he says nothing wrong with it,help me out guys, what else could cause this if I bypass all the electrical system, and still have the problem?

Re: 1976 johnson 55hp two cylinder starter problem

Save srory with my 50 HP 4 stroke!----

My story---

Yamaha F50 TLRT (4 stroke, 50 HP), purchased 4-1-1995

The starter is not 'strong enuf' to spin the engine. The engine does start if I use the manual pull cord.

I have taken the starter off the engine and on the bench it spins up and APPEARS fine. I put it back on the engine and removed all plugs to test compression and on the 4th cylinder it did not have enuf strength to complete the test. The brushes are about 1/2 IN long.

There is no apparent burning on the armature.

I have tested for continuity and all appears fine--- magnets all go to ground and copper is all continuous.

Have you found the answer???

Thanks a lot---- Rick.

glink_98 , it is very rude to hijack anothers thread, you should have posted in the Yamaha forum.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: 1976 johnson 55hp two cylinder starter problem

Sorry for the perceived rudeness- but---- my inquiry was about the starter motor-- his story was just TOO similar to mine!

Like---
"sitting for quite a while in his yard, tried cranking it,turned slow, thought starter was shot" --- LIKE MINE.

"pop the plugs out cranks fast, put them in barely turns, but once in a great while(rarely turns normal) it will crank." -----LIKE MINE, except it won?t crank for long even with plugs removed.

"I can start the motor with the rope tho" ---- JUST LIKE MINE

"jumped the starter direct off of my truck, same thing" --- JUST LIKE MINE

"took starter off,had it checked by a rebuilder,we cleaned it,tested it,tested ok,he says nothing wrong with it" ---- I haven?t taken it to a rebuilder yet-- BUT-- on the bench it runs fine, when energized with a strong battery. Granted it isn?t doing any work on the bench but it does spin fine. I have taken it apart and it looks OK-- brushes are 1/2 in long, no burning, no shorting. The bushing is a BIT worn.

A bit more info---

The wires have been bypassed--- once I realized the starter was sick, I did all testing by energizing directly at the starter. Up here in Alaska many of us have beefy portable battery units for starting cold balky equipment. Rather than jump cars, these portable batteries are much handier. So?I have been attaching clamps directly to the starter.

Hope to hear from you all---

Thanks a lot --- Rick
