I have a 6hp Evinrude model # 6604a. I bought a carb kit replaced bowl and such, rebuilt the fuel pump. Before I rebuilt the pump and carb it would fire for a few seconds. Found the fuel line dry rotted. Both lines replaced. Less than a year old lines for tank and bulb. Now it won't even fire. I spray some fuel in the cylinder holes and it fires but won't start. Bowl fills up and builds pressure. New plugs as well. Not sure what's going on. It's been sitting wanna get it running to see what else could go wrong with it. I did spray fogger in the cylinders before I worked on it last fall. The new plugs don't have any oil and don't have that used smell on them.

I don't have a tester. I can turn the flywheel by hand and it gives a pretty good spark.

Sorry, perhaps you do not realize how important it is to answer the question.---Can not help without a yes or no.

Oh sorry. I pulled the plug individually and pulled it over. I can't tell a distance. I'll see if I can try and tell if it does jump 5/16.

assuming good spark....

you rebuilt that square pump or replaced it ?? repairing it is tricky did you do a blow test when finished in to out air flows out to in no air should flow.

read this three times and understand....no joke!!!

http://www.leeroysramblings.com/Rebuilding_fuelpump.htm

you did the carb... did you blow all passages with air to ensure they were clean
did you set the float parallel to the carb bowl body when flip upside down ?
when you reassembled the carb did you blow test the carb... air goes in the fuel inlet when right side up and NO AIR goes in when upside down
did you replace the fat gasket at the bottom of the carb bowl
you did inspect and clean the high speed jet ???

did you line up the carb body side hole with the new carb gasket .... the side hole lets fuel flow up to the idle chamber

will the engine run better by pumping the primer bulb on the hose ?? if yes the pump is not sucking gas properly... time to rebuild it properly (pump gasket in place ?) see link above

and report back !!

btw did you install the spring clip on the inlet needle ...some needles are sticky and the clip pulls it down when the floats drops... letting fresh fuel flow in the bowl.

I rebuilt it. Did the blow test in the inlet and the outlet didn't let any sit back through on the fuel pump. The square one on the side of the motor. I replaced the gaskets and the spring clip on the float with the needle.
Pulled the Welch plug and that was clean. I replaced the gasket on the bowl. It seems to be lined up as far as I can tell its lined up. I made sure not to disturb it when I bolted the bowl back on. Didn't blow through the carb to see if air is allowed both ways. Air will run through right side up.

Couldn't get it to run enough to see if pumping the bulb would help.

Thanks.

Ps I've read through lee Roy's ramblings good site!

shoot some gas in the carb to see if it will sucked in further in and start a bit...

if it does start a bit ... fuel is not being properly sucked out of the carb fuel bowl into the crankcase so you must have a fuel restriction in the carb

check the high speed circuit (main hollow pillar post centered in the carb body ) it must allow fuel to rise up to the carb air inlet channel to be drawn in to the engine (pull the choke)

btw do you feel the crankcase sucking air into the carb??? place your fingers in front of the carb face and pull th starter cord.. it must suck air to pull some fuel inside the crankcase area and ultimately the piston chambers

It does not start blowing fuel into carb with squirt bottle. I'll check the carb tomorrow to see if it is sucking air.

I can't smell gas on the plugs when I pull them after squirting some gas and pulling it over a few times.

i dont think so on the plug wires. They run in line and seem that's the way they hooked up.

may be missing on yours but usually the top cylinder has a small metal band/clip on it near the spark plug boot

Yep it does they are right. And the carb does suck air not sure how much is enough though.

Do this simple test.-----Remove sparkplugs.-----Put a few drops of fuel in each hole.-----Install plugs and try and start it.----What happens ?

It will fire/start briefly when I spray fuel in each hole. Very briefly though. Runs for maybe 2/3 seconds.

Remove the carburetor and clean it !----Use a screwdriver / small hammer to remove the one nut.-----That saves messing with the starter !

I didn't think of the hammer trick. I've had the carb off and on about 15 times. Got it down to a science. About 5 mins on and off.
