I have a 1976 70 HP Johnson that runs great but has no tilt and trim. And then I have a 1986 70 HP Johnson that is locked up but it has tilt and trim. Is it possible to take the 1976 powerhead and put it on the 1986 midsection? They look like there the same powerheads, Im just not sure about the exhaust matching up on the base, or the shaft spline.

Thanks in advance for any help.

there was a redesign around 80 but certainly worth looking at swapping out the mount, way easier than changing powerhead, the mount may have been something they didn't change.

I thought about that, but the 1976 has a duel ram hydraulic assist and the pins that hold them in place are smaller that the the pin that holds the single ram in place on the 1986. it might be kind of hard to see but here is a picture.

I put a 1974 70 hp evionrude powerhead on a 1985 70 hp johnson lower section. It took a little work and some engineering but I have a great running unit now and one that will be around for awhile. If you need more info PM me and I will fill you in.

Are the drive shaft gears the same on both or do they also need to be swaped?
