Hey everyonez

I just bought a 1975 evinrude 6hp.
The motor "jumps" or "slips" out of forward gear when moving. Sometimes it'll hold for a couple of minutes, sometimes it's only 30 seconds.

I can hold the shifter forward and it's good, wonder if this would cause damage though?
I don't have to forcefully hold it there.

Anyway, I am going to take the motor out and have a look at that lower rod.

Anyone know of any videos or guide to a repair like this ?

You have to take lower unit apart to check shifter and forward gear.-----There is no adjustment features on these.

Can you elaborate a bit more?

The where do I find the forward gear in the lower unit?

Wondering if this problem is common and if I should be worried I bought a brick

the 6r71 has a a small link down the exhaust housing ... by loosing the GC it will drop an inch or so then you can fit the 2 rods together

Use a drive socket to loosen the lower bolt... motors had side cover plates.

in any event check the link clip

Drop down the GC 1 inch and confirm that the two links are joined properly it may be just a question of loosening a bolt (usually the lower one) and reinsering the lower shift rod where it normally goes in the link then tightening things up..

don't remove the bolt completely and dont drop it inside. !!

all the shift dog does is gets pulled up or push down by the shifter rod to slide the gear mid-way (neutral) into the forwrd or reverse gear . Check the GC needs 90 grade oil full !

So I took off the GC.

The rods both seemed to be in the right spot within the link. There is a little groove that the bolt seems to grab on for the correct position. The bolts were also tight.

However, one thing I noticed with the shift dog.
I grabbed it with some pliers to pull it up into forward gear.
It barley stays in place. Once in forward gear position I just have to tap the top of it and it pops back down. Is this normal?

If I recall there is a side detent spring inside the GC that should hold the shift rod at it's assigned position !!

the GC may have been openned and incorrectly reassembled in the past no big deal just a pain to open fix & reseal.

since you do not know if the GC leaks and takes water you may as well do all the 3 seals while it is open .. lots of utubes for you incl how to remove the shift rod oring

see picture detent in yellow

Which seals would I need exactly, Could you provide me the part numbers? I don't want to grab the wrong stuff ! Haha

And a part no. For the side detent spring as well would be appreciated 👍
Do I have to remove the water impeller as well as the drive shaft to be able to remove the bottom gear case where the shift dog is ?

I really appreciate your help with this one.
