Just bought a bayliner with a straight 6 and 3 carb setup with 280 sterndrive. Is there any recommendations for an upgrade or should I keep what I have? New to the site and working on boats so any info is greatly appreciated.

Welcome!!

Upgrading would likely cost more than buying a different boat.

That is the AQ170 model engine aka aq165. How does it run?

Like Mello says.WAY expensive to change anything.Fill out the profile???
Check the drive bellows for water.Any loose parts on the drive. The helmet or the lock system?
Make sure the fuel system is clean, new filters and no water in the tank.
Back of the motor on the bell housing where it goes thru the transom should be a grease fitting.GREASE that about 20 strokes..Above that might be a fitting on the steering arm grease that too.
Drain the drive and fill with 30w oil.Fill from the allen head plug under the back cover.
Remove the manifold bellows and check for corrosion.
Then just keep an eye on it.The worst thing for a boat is to let it set.J
