I am new to this site and thanks in advance for any replies to this thread. I have been boating/fishing since birth, however i have never owned my own boat. My father has always had an I/O and i now own a 75 50hp johnson OB mounted on a 14' glass tri-hull that fires right up everytime. It doesnt have power tilt/trim and im not getting much out of it. I c other 50's out on the water blowing by me. Is it the tilt/trim or improper prop not allowing for optimal performance? It takes forever to plane out and when i have one other person on the boat it plows like a tug.

Also:
i have a tach and am wondering what rpm should i b getting out of this motor and what is the compression. I dont know how to measure the correct pitch and size of the prop shaft.

Re: 1975 50hp johnson specs.

newer engines will have a weeee bit more power but more weight soo idk you figure.

newer engines are prop rated while yours....crank.

instead of upgrading see if you can optimize. right cavitation height. correct prop and rpm range

whats the boat rated for?
