1974(?) SRV220 restoration

I posted in Sea Ray boats by manufacturer, but thought I'd post here too.

I'm new to boats, new to the forum and generally new to boating. To this end, I picked up a SRV220 and the goal for this summer is just to get out on it! The fancy stuff like paint and trim will be next year. For this year, I figure if we just get the interior put back to gether, we can do the pretty stuff later. The floor was done already by the previous, here's where I'm at now:

The engine compartment is done as far as we are concerned and the engine itself is a new rebuild with 0 hours on it! It sounds great, needs minor stuff, like connecting fuel line, etc. etc.

Any input from anyone? I'm going out right now to see if I can get the console put into place so I can start measuring for my outdoor galley which belongs right in front of the console. We're putting in a 120v fridge and a slightly larger sink with two pumps -- one for fresh water and one for lake water. That's my job. MDH gets to finish up the engine.

Your project sounds interesting. Is the outdoor galley something that was original to the boat, or a modification that you're going to make? I know Sea Ray had a 22ft. Overnighter that had an outdoor galley in front of the console, but that was a hardtop.

I'm looking forward to seeing more as you make progress! :)

Deja vu... I just got rid of a 1973 SRV220 this last year, it was too far gone to save. I traded the drive train for a TIG welder, and kept a lot of the parts.

Yours is even the same color... though it's in much better shape.

Erikgreen -- thanks for the positive input. I sure need it! I'm a bit overwhelmed with the project I've taken on.

Jstep -- this boat is the hardtop model, but the hardtop is gone. I've been looking around a bit for a replacement hardtop, but haven't found one yet. Haven't totally decided if I want to do that or not anyway. The outdoor galley behind the console was part of the original layout. Actually there is about 3 ft of space there for it. So we are putting in a 120V 'fridge, a slightly larger than original sink with a faucet with "F"resh and "L"ake instead of Hot and Cold.

Pictures will be slow in coming as I have very limited time on this, but hopefully today I will get the console support box designed, built and upholstered.

We're using in/outdoor carpeting and vinyl of course. I've had a hard time so far getting vinyl for seats and such for a reasonable price. So far I'm looking at about $1000 for it and that's too rich for me for my first boat project.

If anyone has pics of the console area of this boat, I'd love to see them. Everything I'm putting together here is guess-work and I'm currently completely at a loss for the trim and small things: how to make it look like it all fits, you know.

Aha! That makes more sense now. In one of your previous posts, you said the galley was in front of the console.

So, for the hardtop models, is the hardtop made to detach and be removable, or did a previous owner just chop it off? If you decide you want to track down a replacement, maybe you can give these guys a try: http://www.laniermarine.com/. They seem to have a whole bunch of old Sea Rays up on blocks with no motors. I'm not sure if they part them out, but it's worth giving them a call.

As far as pictures of the layout, you can go here http://www.searay.com/archives.asp?tab=6&year=1976&folder2=Full%20Brochure%20PDF and download the full 1976 brochure (they don't have 1974) and look on pages 8 though 10 for some pictures of what the galley should look like.

Good luck with the project. POST MORE PICS! Even if you haven't made much progress, I'd love to see more of what it looks like right now. :)

I think the hard top was permanently affixed by the look of it. Thanks for the link, I got some good pictures from there. But Georgia is awfully far away from Northern Ontario. I'd pay a pretty penny just for shipping.

I did download that brochure already. It does give a general idea of layout which has already helped me. Unfortunately, the '76 model is quite a bit different than '74 in the detail work. Still, I'd love to see the lines between the console and the inner hull / wall (sorry, still new to boating terminology). Also, the trim used around the windows and under the windshield. How to close in the wall. Really, I need to get on one of these boats, but that just ain't gonna happen. Especially after looking at the pics from Lanier, I'm thinking I need to finish my wall first and I haven't got a clue how to do it.

I ended up getting nothing done yesterday as all my 3/4" plywood seems to have gone missing <sigh>. Must go shopping today or tomorrow.

Pity you're not closer to me geographically... I still have the top off of my SRV220, at least the fiberglass for it. I'm about to toss it in the dumpster too, it's the wrong size for any of the boats I have/use now.

I can take some pics of it if you want to know what it looks like so you can copy it.

oooooh -- very nice! I love the new portholes! Great idea for next summer!

Pics? Yes, I'd LOVE some. How about at the console, right side -- I have no idea how the interior wall trim is supposed to match up with the wood console edge and even the exact location of the console. Right now, I have it lined up to be 36" back from the cuddy wall. I think height wise, I have it the base to be about 20" or so. I can't remember just now. Could you measure the height on the console base for me please? That'd be great!

What kind of trim does he have under the windshield. I think it came stock with carpeting there (love the 70's), but I was going to do padded vinyl.

What did he put in for seating? I was going to do basically stock for the "dining area" and at the stern, but was hoping to do something else for the driver. Ideas?

Thanks for the offer of pics. That'll be a huge help to me.

Re: 1974(?) SRV220 restoration

i will get some interior pics tomorrow afterwork.

he had the dinette on the port side accross from the sink and helm, and at the back it is a bench running the full length overtop of the engine cover(original cover redone). That is how it was when we got is aswell. the boat was partially sunk when we got it.

If i remember correctly there is teak trim under the windsheild, but i will have to double check when i get the pictures tomorrow. He also recovered the walls in dark grey, and black carpet, along with darker grey cushions in the V birth, and white and black vinyl cushion out back..

I'm looking forward to the pics. If you remember, please measure the height of the mounting box for the helm. My son is picking up my plywood as I type and I'm hoping to do that tomorrow.

That is the original location of the dinette, which is supposed to convert to a bunk. As well the seating at the stern converts also, but that's a next year job for me. As soon as I get the helm, seats, lights, engine and trailer in a suitable shape -- she's going in. I'd just like to do the helm right because I don't want to have to redo it. The rest can wait or be "temp" until I get coverings and trim in.

legoman67 -- THANK YOU! These pictures are exactly what I needed! It shows me all the stuff that I was so lost on. Perfect. Woo-hoo! Now I must quit typing and start building. :)

My son says, "Nice boat! Hey, Mom, is our boat going to look like that?" Uh-huh -- ya, right... I don't think so. But we can dream.

Thanks again.

That boat is GORGEOUS! Really amazing. That's probably the best restoration/update job I've seen posted on here so far. Do you have more pics of the restoration process? What is the stuff used on the deck? Is that some sort of rubber, non-slip mat? That looks like what I had in mind for my little Starcraft.

Also, if you have the opportunity, I would love a couple of pics from in the boat looking out the front, while the soft enclosure on the sides of the hardtop are off. Both from the helm and the stern would be awesome. Thanks!

Re: 1974(?) SRV220 restoration

Finally got a chance to get at the boat... did the interior wall covering on one side before I had to return to life's duties :( I know where I could have done better -- figuring out the size of carpet because now I'm going to have to figure out how to hide a seam, but all in all, I'm pretty impressed with this beginner job:

Hopefully next weekend, I'll be working on the boat, not installing a pump <sigh>

Re: 1974(?) SRV220 restoration

I picked me up a 73 SRV220 OV....mine is about 95% complete.
This one had a double burner electric/stove/hotplate in it plugged into a regular 120v ac outlet, but during some time in it's life, someone removed the power inverter and the hotplate. I put a microwave in it's place but still need to egt a power inverter.

absolutely love this old girl....been using her out on the water as is for now, will clean her up some over the winter.

would love to find the snap on enclosure canopy for the rear also..
