My very first boat with a 1975 Evinrude 85hp out back purchased for $500! We took it out before purchase and everything seemed fine. After removing the carpet found a large soft area on the transom-so that will be replaced soon as well as the deck, as I removed-what i assume to be-the fill plugs for the foam and found the foam and floor to be saturated with water...Wish me luck!

UPDATE:
Remove the engine this weekend with the help of some friends and started demo work.

My test hole....yup the deck needs replaced. I do not have the option to remove the entire cap because of room available and the entire cap is fiber-glassed to the hull on the inside, so I decided to remove the splashwell area where it tapers into the top rail area to keep the refinishing work to a minimum.

Transom needs replaced, seeing as how it's 75% MULCH

Overall view. Bow fiberglass removed to replace the deck under it- rotted as well.
Today I was cleaning up the wood from the transom and Mr. UPS came by with 6 gal. of epoxy and 17yrds x 50in 1.5oz CSM, so now the real work begins.
The wife having fun messing with the camera.

Yep you done opened up a can a worms now!LOL.
Have you got a good respirator mask for cutting and grinding?
Also I am not positive but i'm pretty sure you don't use csm with epoxy resin. Use 1708 biaxle or cloth/woven. Hopefully one of the pro's will chime in on it. I could be wrong..
Have fun ! S.P.

Yes, I have a respirator from my automotive painting days, which I sometimes forget I have on even when not doing dusty tasks.i also wear safety glasses constantly and gloves. I work for a large tractor company and they have done a pretty good job beating safety into my head. As far as the csm goes- all of the builds that I have read use the csm for the bulk of the work and the biax for reinforcement and a nice finish- could be wrong though.

Csm good for poly resin but not for epoxy resin. It's something about the bindings in the csm. I sure I have read it more than once.

Well I took your advice sPhelps and emailed US Composites about the compatibility of their CSM with their epoxy and this is what I got:
"Unfortunately, we are not able to accept any returns on cloth. *You actually
can use epoxy with the mat, it just isn't as easy to wet out as it is if you
are working with polyester resin. It will take the epoxy longer to penetrate
and fully wet out the mat."
Based on that I will cautiously continue with the material that I have. Now I just have to wait on my 1/2in ply to dry out..

Transom has been laminated with PL Premium and the stern side now has 4 coats of resin and then 1 layer 1.5oz CSM. The CSM just drinks the resin, so I think everything will be OK. I also have 5lbs of 1/4in strand and a few yards of 1708 biax on the way.

Re: 1974 Newman ?Charger? Project

Ok it's been a while with slow progress( wife likes to book up my weekends) and I am gassing in the stringers and bulkheads. Now I was wondering if I could get away with 1 layer of the 1708 on the sides of my stringers since they have so little exposed(2in. On the outside and closer to 3in on the inside). I have also added 2 more bulkheads-total of 5 now. I have read several posts on the subject and everyone seems to use atleast 2 layers of biax but they all have taller stingers than I do, I didn't know if this would matter. Width to the inside of the gunwales is 38", boat is 16ft, deck will be about 24in from the top of the gunwales, hull is 4-10 in deep from the deck, 85 hp engine.

Be gentle.
