1974 85 hp evinrude idle/advance problem

After starting engine the idle increases till the advance moves up leaving it running at a very high idle.I can't seem to get it to kick down without moving it by hand.Motor always was a little fussy starting the first time.I recently started feathering the choke switch on initial firing to keep it turning over till it fires and after that it seems to run fine.Don't know if that has any bearing!

What is it you are moving by hand? Do you have a manual to do a proper sync. & link?

I'm looking into getting a manual now so bear with me and my terminology.An arm rotates from under the flywheel.A rod then pushes a lever forward which in turn rotates the throttle rod increasing the rpm. I feel this rod is the timing advance.

Before you get into sync and link, try running the engine with the throttle cable disconnected on the engine end. It is possible the throttle cable is out of adjustment/binding under the cowl.

The arm holding the rod is part of the ignition stator plate. This stator plate rotate's in a Delron (plastic) bushing which is held in a machined seat in the upper crankshaft bearing carrier. The lube on this bushing can get hard, and dirty from ageing making the plate sticky, or sluggish to move. This rotating plate performs the ignition timing function. If you look at the rod that is pushing the lever forward. You will see that this lever is stopped by a set screw with a rubber bumper on the end. That is the timing adjustment screw. Disconnect the remote control throttle cable at the engine, and see how freely the the entire linkage system moves by hand. If sticky, clean, and relube all pivot points.

bandanaman , look also at the vinyl sheath that encases the timer base conductors. The vinyl can get very stiff with age and prevent the free movement that is needed. Look Here.

and he made his own test tank! ,,nice!.. i notice your idle screw is all the way out ..i had to do that to obtain the 5 dgrees in gear, my 1975 135 requires in the book for throttle roller pickup.how are u doing with the timing and all that ?i have to sync all this tomorrow . dz florida.
