1974 50 HP Evinrude Help Please

I bought this motor recently and took it in to a repair shop to have the engine checked out. They came back with the following parts needing to be replaced and wanted a fortune for the parts and the service.

I'll be happy to buy all the parts from iboats and I'll get my brother-in-law to help me do the repairs...I just need help to 'decipher' a few of the parts that I need. It reads.....

2 Carb Kits 36.50 each (can read this-no problem here)
2 Base 2.00 each (don't know what this is?)
1 Cover 15.10 each (cover to what?)
1 Face 10.35 (what is this?)
1 Fuel Pump 98.95 (can read this-no problem here)
1 Hose Kit 10.00 (what type of hose?)
1 ret (or ref??) kit 2.00 (what is this?)
1 Ch. O Ring 2.50 (?)
2 Ignition Coils 55.00 each (can read this-no problem here)
1 Water Pump 83.32 (can read this-no problem here)
1 Ex Seal 18.95 (what type of seal?)

1 Key switch 38.75 (can read this-no problem)
mis term 5.00 (don't know this is?)

It probably only NEEDS a small portion of the list.

First, get yourself an OEM Service Manual from www,outboardbooks.com.

Then, go to the Engine FAQs Forum. Do "Awakening a sleeping outboard" and, if needed, "Outboard won't start".

Let us know where you stand after that.

Thanks JB. I have already ordered one and it should be in today or tomorrow. The engine turns over strong...it just doesn't ever kick over. I have no idea how old the gas is so maybe the carbs are clogged? The mechanic also said it looks like most all parts are original. I'll let you know after I read that section.

as JB stated. i doubt it is all needed. start at the beginning, read this http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680 so you have some understanding.

1st check the compression. you want to see 100 psi atleast and with in 10% of each other.

2nd check spark with a tester, you want spark to jump atleast 1/2 inch.

these 2 items will tell you if you have a good base to work from. get back with us with your results.

get rid of old gas, fuel lines will need to be replaced, due to ethanol.
