Hey!! I just got a promotion! NOW, with all that extra pay, I can afford one of those floaty doo-hickies that keep the ignition key afloat in the water. Things are looking up and I'm sure the Admiral will be quite pleased.

You're a real gentleman to think of that, GA...and for my part, I'll get her a bottle of Ripple and maybe some knee pads.

An involved Admiral makes better days on the water, not to mention easier times at the ramp. As long as she lets you drive sometimes.
I'd suggest you try to get the Admiral at the helm FULL time, you'll catch more fish that way :watermelon:

Good luck on having the admiralty's involvement in the de-foaming.....

..de-foaming?...the Admiral doesn't drink that stuff, and besides, a little foam on top never bothered me one bit. I guess we won't have to worry about that de-foaming thing...

If you have to take up the deck, there may be flotation foam below. Even when it's not water logged & funky, it's no fun to try to remove......

Just funning with you about the "de-foaming" above; I will be removing the old flotation foam when the old decking is taken up. I want to clean the inside hull, bow to stern, before I add the new foam and new decking. I'll try to stay on the serious side in future posts.

I apologize, I just thought you misunderstood. Apparently, I misunderstood...

If not for fun, why would we attempt this madness?

No worries. Frosty adult libations are good too.... :watermelon:

Piper,

I'll be starting a resto on a... 1973 16' supersport here in a month or two (it's still usable so I think I'm going to get her wet). I'll be following closely, hoping we can share some info/tips!

Welcome, Yeonik. You will find some good information on this forum. I should be getting my boat back from the Johnson mechanic next week if all goes well; may have to put some new wheels/tires on the trailer at this time to get the boat back home. I'll be starting on the decking/insulation removal at that time.

Question: Considering a new prop for the 1972 Johnson 85 instead of filing the knicks, and a balance job. What is a real good brand to be looking at for a 15 or 17 pitch 3 blade prop. Lots of them out there and I know nothing about brand quality. Thanks in advance.

I have a 13-1/4 X 17 Turning Point Hustler on mine and I'm a big fan of it. It solved a hole-shot and turning blow out issue I was having.

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Received a call from the Johnson mechanic today. Cost me less than $200.00 for the inspection, clean-up, and minor repair with parts. Hooked the earmuffs up, turned on the water, hit the key and the Johnson started right up and sure did run nice. Great idle, not much vibration and plenty of power. The mechanic said he doubted the motor had much running time over the years; even the water pump was in nice condition. I am going to have the throttle cable replaced, buy two new 6-gallon fuel tanks with new hose, buy a new battery and re-do some electrical wiring to the battery. I've made arrangement to have the 85 HP Johnson pulled off the transom and placed on a stand while I replace the decking and transom, and then we will re-mount the Johnson for testing on the water after the "woodwork" is finished. Should have the boat home soon to start on the decking and transom.

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Question: Have noticed that some Starcraft 16 ft SS boats have a center open/close section on the windshield. My boat does not have this feature and I'm not sure if it ever did. Was this center window piece a standard feature for this boat or an option? Thanks.

The 1972 brochures, page 13 specs and pic of the 16' SS show/describe the twin plexi W/S, No center opening window. It's too hard to tell in the '74 brochures. I don't think the center window was an option or standard.

Good news on the Jonny. Sounds like a good runner, Joe.

Thanks, GA. Lots of interesting little features to view on these boats. The more I read the more I am pleased we have this boat as our first project. The Johnson mechanic is extremely well thought of in this area and a very intelligent individual as to mechanical know-how; when we talked last evening, Joyce and I got the impression he was quite pleased to find the motor in such strong shape.

Safe boating,

Joe
