Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Thanks, jbcurt00. Actually I would like to repaint with the original green, at least on the outside of the hull. Joyce is thinking white, or red to match our 2008 Ranger. I'm open to her thoughts...been that way for 44 years.

Nice tin. You will get plenty of use out of it in your neck of the woods. I will be there in mid August fo 10 days in pursuit of salmon in the west bay Traverse City and over to Frankfort. We plan on staying in the campground in Interlochen. I had hoped on getting my project boat completed by the trip but not sure if that is going to happen. Good luck with getting her done and on the water. Will be looking forward to more pics.

Thanks, Weep'n Willy. Give a shout and we'll have a cold one and a pizza at the Karlin Inn. The west bay is also very well known for smallmouth bass fishing if you are so inclined; was reading an outdoor fishing magazine some time ago and the bay was rated as one of the top ten smallmouth spots in the world. I go past the Interlochen State Campground all the time, especially when I go to fly my R/C models at our club flying field at the Interlochen airport. I should be getting along on my restoration by then and perhaps you would like to see the "ol gal" in person.

Yes indeed Joe, there is some great smallie fishing there. Even Babe Winkleman did a show on the bay featuring the smalls. There is also some great fishing for whitefish there too. But for me the name of the game is "Kings". Hard to beat the fight of these brutes. Got this bad boy last September up toward Bowers Harbor.

It would be nice to get together and toss down a couple cold ones and discuss our boat projects.

Nice King! I have never caught a fish like that but I can tell you my time for that kind of fun is getting near LOL. Best to you on your boat project, too.

Welcome to the insanity
I read you mention marine plywood for the deck
Just a FYI you really don't want to use this unless it was 100000% coated and sealed due to copper elements in the wood
Just search under replacing deck and you will have plenty to read just like a transom repair search
Great looking boat and there's just about everything You would ever want to know right here in this forum

Kev - He said marine ply, not pressure treated. :watermelon:

Right on the marine plywood usage. I understand the potential chemistry problem resulting from using pressure treated ply (contains copper) on an aluminum hull; this results in the same type of eventual corrosion as screwing a steel or iron cap fitting into a copper plumbing fixture..failure of the connection and resultant structual damage and/or a leak. Leaks are not good...not good at all.

Took a few photos yesterday to show the trailer condition. Don't really know if it's worth restoring. As a former "big rig" driver you can understand the feeling of wanting a stable and structually sound trailer under that boat. Anyway, as always, constructive comments welcome.

Joe

Hard to tell for sure, but yes there will be some costs associated w/ getting the trailer tow-ready. Any of it bad enough to warrant removal & welding in new metal.

More or less then a 'new' trailer's cost, or a 'better' new to you trailer that'll hopefully cost less to prep?

$800+/- isn't very much when you need tires, rims, axles & springs, electrical, coupler & jack. How much of that does this trailer need? Plus labor to dismantle it, prep it, paint it & put it back together. Plus the costs of paint & other paint items.

Can you get a brand new trailer for $800? Swap the boat to the new trailer in a 1/2 day or less. Done & done.

Fixing this trailer or a 'better' used trailer could be in stages over time, while you work on the boat. Instead of all at once.

Read thru some tin resto threads: Trailer work is very, very low on the 'fun-o-meter'

Pipe - It might be a good idea to get the boat off the trailer so you can really examine it. Then you can poke and hammer on it. From the pics it looks like surface rust, but it's hard to tell from the pics.

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Good points, guys, with relation to the trailer. Tried to get Joyce to lift the boat off the trailer for the photo shoot on Sunday..her look gave me the immediate impression that something else was about to be "shot" LOL. When I pulled the trailer about 8 miles to the engine shop it was an easy pull and the trailer ran straight (which surprised me a bit) so I'm thinking thus: new wheels w/rims, new wheel bearings/caps, new swing front extention, replace wiring, sandblast frame & if sound prime/repaint to match eventual boat color and then it's check rollers, etc and replace fenders. I'll add it all up and, figuring in a time element, see how it compares to just getting a new trailer. I enjoy the total project idea so a new trailer isn't a must have for me. We will see how it all works out.

Trailers are way low on the totem pole for fun,
But being safe and towing without a pucker moment is priceless

Trust me on this one....

i think Kev is the MASTER of those moments

i tend to side with the "maybe replace it" crowd altho i'm an extreme bottom feeder.....you can sink as much into the trsailer as the boat really easy. check your local CL and do the math. remember, trailers (like outboards) come cheaper with a rotting glasser attached......

Ah, yes, pucker moments. Best enjoyed in the driveway after the 800 mile road trip, not in a farmer's field, eh Kev. - Grandad
