Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

You guys all make good points and I do believe Dave hit the nail on the head as I kept thinking he was just humoring me and the pricing was just a "throw-out". Who knows, someone does that and the person restoring the boat might just jump at the offer if he has no experience in such things. Would make a "grand" day for him, eh? LOL One thing is certain, there are plenty of very nice boat restorations shown within this forum and many got restored the good old fashion way without professional soda blasting. Might take me longer to get the JoyRide finished but it will get finished. It's interesting that I checked another soda blasting site and the pricing was $51 per foot of boat length; $51 X 16' = $816. And that is only the outside hull...no trailer or inner hull. Maybe it is a bargain but I think soda blasting is way out of my league...unless I win the lottery...

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

I think I spent $8.99 x 3 ---- Canadian $$ at that. Key is to lay it on thick and let it stay on for a number of hours ---dunno the exact # of hours but all night worked for me. A plastic scraper and a couple of rough bristled toilet brushes and a can to put the stuff when it comes off. I put a boats worth of paint in a tin can.

The only cheaper way I can think of is to let the sun fade the paint away over 20 years... but that might be just a tad impractical!! :)

All the best on whatever route you choose!

Joe, looks like you are moving along with the project quite well. We made our trip up to your area for 10 days of nothing but fishing everyday. Most trip out of the West Bay and a couple trips over to Frankfort. Although fishing wasn't spectacular we did catch plenty, some nice kings, some lake trout, and a steelhead. It just amazes me how big TC area has grown since I lived up that way.

Jim, $27 would be good, I have a spare tin can or two and a plastic scraper, and overnight works for me. About those two toilet brushes though...we have two bathrooms in the house and if the Admiral finds out that I actually went out and bought NEW brushes for the boat...ah,...I think there could be a serious problem with delegation of work.....LOL

Weep'nWilly, Hey......was wondering if you made it up here for some fishing. One thing for sure, Traverse City isn't the "little town" is once was though it's still a super nice area to live in. Wish you'd let me know you were here...had to eat your portion of the Cajun Catfish at Karlin Inn. Oh, I drank your Bud when you weren't looking, too. LOL

No work on the boat yesterday.

Joe... just tell the Admiral they are "highly specialized tools of mass cleaning".... you don't want to accidently strip the enamel off of the toilet!! Besides, nothing says Merry Xmas to the Admiral like a new set of toilet cleaning tools!

scrape as much as you can off with putty knife before you start with the brushes. it will come off a lot more neatly.

at least with my Admiral, the new toilet cleaning tools would quickly become suppositories (for me)

+ 1 above....

I used a cheapo paint brush to slather the safe strip stripper on the paint.... the more the better --- you'll know you've got it right in terms of quantity and time when the paint comes off in your gloved hand.... then use the putty knife and the finish up with brushes. One note...like a lotta fella's here ---- I've tried 3 other kinds of paint strippers... the only one I've found that worked and wasn't nasty to the enviro was the safe strip. There may be others for sure.... but it worked great for me.

Good luck and maybe flowers would work better after more thought on the xmas gift thingy!

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Thanks, InMotion, I'll try some on the outside of the transom first (when I get to that stage) and check it out...by then I'll work myself up to the "...heck, man, I can do this...nothin' to it..." stage.

barato2, I don't view YouTube on the computer (heck the Admiral and I don't even have TV hooked up to our 51 inch flatscreen; we watch DVD's from the library...all free.)

Worked on the boat today...bailed water out of the boat after LOTS of rain last night; the tarp tore at the top corners of the starboard window when the foam pipewrap came off. The Admiral suggested I get a bigger sponge...

CERTIFIED COATINGS SURE STRIP PAINT REMOVER from Aircraft Spruce

For anyone interested, here is a link for the SureStrip paint stripper product from Certified Coatings. InMotion, is this the product you used on your boat?

Priced as follows: quart @ $18.50 gallon @ $29.75 5-gallon @ $116.95 as of just checking the link site.

Safe boating,

Joe

Nope called Safe Strip by Natura.... here is a link for reference and product details: http://http://homeathome.homehardware.ca/en/rec/index.htm/Paint-D%C3%A9cor/Surface-Preparation/Strippers/1L-Safe-Strip-Wood-Stripper/_/N-ntmg0Z2ppt/R-I1650350

I used less than 3 Litres --- 3/4 of a gallon to do a 15' Jet.
