Hey CB, nice progress so far, was just going to say I have the same trailer and I rebuilt it, you might want to have a look at it on page 7 of my 1979 starcraft rest remodel page might give you some ideas.

Re: 1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

want to thank h20, sig and dozer, and bud for the input. after a few days of thought believe i will sand blast and go with a hvlp sprayer and rustoleum rusty primer thinned with acetone, followed by 2 coats rustoleum professional gloss black thinned with acetone, much like bud did. also going to forgo the rear rollers and go with a bunk system like sig suggests and dozer actually converted a trailer just like this to bunk only and looks like a real good and economical idea. my rollers are real bad and all of 70 bucks to replace that i will not have to spend, and i like the idea of no rollers on bottom except for down the keel. you guys think i should be using a hardener with this rustoleum, ( they dont realy recommend any) and if so just the last coat or all coats? also how much primer and paint you figure it will take?

I'd recommend adding the Acrylic Enamel Hardener to the Paint as well. It really enhances the Gloss as well as making it cure faster and giving it a much more durable finish. this link has some good info, it talks about Majic Tractor paint but it's basically the same as Rustoleum or any other Acrylic Enamel Oil Based Paint.

i used hardener in every coat

also if u are going to use that gun from harbor freight i suggest u buy a bunch of the disposable cups

also clean the gun thoroughly after every use. i honestly disassembled the gun and cleaned it every time. make sure your compressor is big enough to run it.

1 quart of each would be more than enough, those sprayers make paint go a looooooooooong ways. I don't know about what the primer uses for thinner used but the rusto topside I shot which is the Alkyd enamel uses xylene for thinner, says on the can what to use spraying, rolling etc. I really have had good luck so far with the Van Sickle tractor/industrial paint so far in the spray bomb cans, it's the same as alkyd formula as the qts or gals and is even mixed with xylene. I can't wait to break out the HVLP and shoot some with WOGs catalyst hardener mixed in. I would use the hardener each coat, don't want a difference between the 2 coats, not to mention it might look awesome and you want to stop then...

thanks guys, the rusto professional uses acetone for thinner ( from instructions from websight ) but not sure on the primer? will look into disposable cups. and use the valspar hardener in each coat. ( even the primer ?) planning on 1 shot of primer and 2 of top coat. h20 if i go 2 coats of top coat you thinking 2 qts then? so one of primer and two of topcoat?

NOT in the primer. You don't want it to be a harder finish or a higher shine.

agreed curt. got some disposable cups on way per sigs recs, and did some checking with rusto and both primer and top coat recommend acetone for thinner. now to look into some hardener per wog,and use in both top coats. then thinking blast next week and get some paint on. also wondering what to wipe down with before spraying, and also what to clean gun up with? acetone work for all or should i be using mineral spirits to wipe down and clean up with?

Re: 1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

I did two of primer and two of top coat, remember a good paint job is mostly in the prep work. Sand smooth treat bare spots with zinc chromate (self etching) primer, then I did two coats of primer followed with two top coats I mixed just a little extra hardner in the last top coat NOT MUCH

I used Mineral Spirits for clean up on all it did a MUCH better job

Re: 1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

yeah, my plan sig is sand blast it . ( its the trailer so should not need the self etching) wipe down with 1/2 mineral spirits and 1/2 acetone and then spray the primer with acetone thinner , sand lightly with scotchbright, wipe down, then 2 coats top with acetone thinner (per rustoleum recs) and valspar hardener, lightly sanded between and wiped down. cleaning up the sprayer real well between coats with mineral spirits. any of you see anything wrong with my plan, let me know and thanks.

Looks like a good plan. The only difference in what I did was that used the Majic brand paint reducer from Tractor Supply which I am sure is the same as acetone just much more expensive.

Yeah, I used a 50/50 mix of Acetone and MS for my thinner. It worked really well. When the temps got into the Upper 90's I switched to the MFG Reducer and it worked better. Temps in the 70's and 80's the 50/50 worked well.

Wait now, I thought we were talking about painting your trailer right now? Right? One qt of paint is more than enough for 2 top coats.

Yup, a quart will be Plenty, by the time you thin it etc. I'd only mix up 2 cups at a time using 1 oz of hardener per 2 cups of paint and about 1/3 cup of 50/50 thinner. It should shoot like a dream with the HF HVLP Gun!!!! 40 PSI. Make sure an put a Filter at the Compressor AND at the gun. Don't want any water in the line!!!! These HF cheap ones work good. Throw em away after a couple of uses.

Re: 1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

thanks h20, sig and wog . all on same page i think. rustoleum recommends acetone for thinner so that is way i am going to go. gonna paint at work inside so will be about 60 degrees. also got the mineral spirits for cleanup, so if primer with acetone seems not right i can mix with som mineral spirits i found the majic catylist hardener and will use according to wogs link. and yep got the filters as above ordered. got 1 qt primer and 2 top coat , but figure i am going to need some primer and top coat on boat also. my thoughts are going to only need another qt or 2 of white top coat, and will see if i got enough primer left for boat.excited about the hvlp gun and like the idea of getting my feet wet on trailer before boat. gonna start primer on bottom, then sides and top, so i like the learning progression i got planned.

just thinking ahead to boat ( wont be till late spring ) and thinking sanding , self etch primer on bare spots, same rusto primer. ( you guys think 1 or 2 coats primer ) and then a couple coats top coat with hardener.
