Hello all! I’m new to the rebuilding boat thing. I’ve owned a few boats but never had to do much on them other than fish and winterize.
I got a free boat from a friend who owns the marina near where I live. I’ve been looking for a boat for a while and realize that anything worthwhile is out of my price range. He showed me ‘Kermit’ (it’s avacado? Green!) that has been sitting, covered on his property since 2011. It was still dry and looked like someone had dropped it off as it was still full of gear. No motor on it but it was worth the price! My son (he’s 12) and I decided to rebuild it together. We worked all weekend on it and made lots of headway. I’ve been reading piperjoes thread as he has the same boat. I’ve learned a lot and finally figured out how to join this group. So here goes nothing! I’ll start with some pics.
We took everything out of the boat, removed the dual consoles, front benches and removed the floor. The floor was not good but good enough to use as templates for the new one. The transom wood and under the gunwales was still dry and strong. I’m thinking this will be a fairly easy rebuild (famous last words, I know!).
I’m a 90% kind of guy. I’ve never truly finished anything, but tearing this boat apart has been a different feeling for me. I’m not feeling overwhelmed at all and am actually really enjoying myself.
My goal is to have this boat in the water by next spring as we travel to Maine yearly and boat 13 miles to a campsite that’s truly off the grid. We’ve been doing this trip (Maine and/or the Adirondacks) for a decade with a 1974 StarCraft 14’ rowboat with an 18 HP Nissan on it. It’s a great boat (Bass Turd) but we need something larger and more comfortable as we encounter rain a lot. It will also fit the three of us and our dog better. People have mentioned the Clampetts a few times when they see us take off from shore!
I tried to attach the pics. It says the administrator will need to resolve this before I can. Whatever that means. I’m not much good at the computer thing. Guess I’m a dinosaur!
Anyways, I’m hoping to make some friends and get some questions answered as I move along.
