As I prepare to tackle the deck.. I am considering glassing only the top side of the deck (to keep weight down and conserve $$$). Looking for an effective and economical solution for sealing the bottom side deck? Spar Varnish, Enamel Paint, ect...???

Resin and CSM is fairly cheap. The bottom only needs 1 Layer of CSM. I would not recommend skimping on that. The cost of the varnish or the Paint would be almost the same as the resin and the CSM.

I agree with WOG on that. The underside of your deck is where rot is most likely to start.

Ok so I am a very happy Iboater! I finished tabbing the transom to the hull yesterday!!! Chuck Norris could roundhouse kick this transom a thousand times and have nothing come of it. I pre cut most of the sections of decking as well. Going to pick up some more resin and cloth tonight so I can start glassing the bottom side of the deck panels.

The only issue that I am going to run into at this point is with the rear cap not fitting over the new beefed up transom. I know that I am going to have some grinding to do. I hope to get some pictures of the cap up on here so I can get a little guidance. I need the cap to come back another 1/2" and I am not sure where the 1/2" is going to come from..

Thinking about this cap situation.. I am thinking that the only way to get the cap to come back a 1/2" is to cut out the part of the splash well that was glued to the transom and then reglass it in place and bond it to the new transom core directly? Would this improve the strength of the boat or weaken it in some way?

Here are the photos of the cap issue that I am having. I am thinking that I will be grinding away a section of splash well and rebuilding it. Take a look. Sorry about the bad lighting.

As you can see there I do not need that much more travel. Only about a 1/2" if that.

There are the pictures of the splashwell/rear section of cap. I am thinking of cutting out the lower part of the splashwell where it meets the transom. Then using Bondo Glass and CSM and 1708 to rebuild it. What do you think guys?

Hoping to get some feedback as I would like to make any needed cuts tonight. Waiting for a paycheck to buy more materials. So I will be tackling the free stuff this weekend. I know that I do not need to worry about this until the deck is in but I might as well get it ready to go back on while time allows.

How did the transom angle change? You might be able to use nylon straps around the boat the torque it back into shape. Do you have pics ouf what it look like originally?

I don't think the angle has changed. I belive this is being caused by the thicker transom. I replaced a 1" transom core with a 1.5" transom core.

It is Just a bit thicker than the original. I thought I would be able to get away with it as the back of the splashwell was covered with PL glue from the PO's attempt at repair. I ground away about a 1/2" of glue but it didn't quite get me there.

The only pictures that I have are what I have posted so far. I didn't start taking pictures until I had removed the rear cap and floor. :facepalm:

Yes, the rest of the cap lines up perfectly with the hull. just not coming back far enough. The back of the splashwell clamped flat against the transom and I am left with about 1/4-1/2 inch of space at the stern. It is a little bowed in the middle but the clamps take care of that.

I wouldn't worry about it. You can glass all that back together and sand an fair it so that you'll never know it happened. Carry on!!!!
