If the cable is broken it will need to be replaced. First pull the controls apart and pull on the cable to make sure it is still in one piece if it is you have a problem in your control box. good luck
You have an unregulated rectifier unless it has been upgraded, so you don't want to use any kind of auto battery. The best bet is a deep cycle dual purpose marine battery as large as you can fit. I used a minimum of 650 CCA on that series because of the demand (300 RPM).
