Re: 1973 16' Starcraft Super Sport new to me

Got the motor issues worked out during the fall.. hada few fun trips out on the river...

But I've been a little leery of the transom so I went ahead and pulled it. Got new hardware in the mail last night. New transome cut and glued together.. It's getting sealed up now. Also cleaning up the splash well area and wanted to try to clean up the rear of the boat. I though a bare aluminum back would be neat and somethign to do while I'm sealing the transom and waiting on drain tubes as well as the cable boots...

This is about as far as i'm gonna go with it... Plenty good enough for a kewl factor for me...

It didn't take all that much work to get it to this point at least in my opinion... except removing the old paint......

What do ya think? Kewl? dumb? shoddy workmanship? Regardless I'm pretty happy with the results..

SNG - If you're happy, I'm happy. ;) If ya changed the camera angle I'd see yer mug. I say that's a good polish job.

The Naked Transom! I think it's  !

What are you using to seal/protect it?

I'm considering it at least for the bottom of my hull (versus a grey that "resembles" aluminum) and I'm wondering what folks are using to protect the aluminum (Sonus, Sharkhyde or something else?).

Hey everybody... I finished up with my polishing tonight for the back of the boat... check it out...

BLING BLING!!!! BOO YEA :pride:

Moving on to prepping the splash-well now... Primer and wet sanding.....

Anyways. Ii think i"m gonna go with the metal tubes instead of the plastic ones.. I got them in the mail and don't really like them.... Hopefully I can rig up the flaring tool I got in the last thread I opened.....

I thought I toss up a pic of what these pretty reasonable biminis look like on a 16' Super sport...

RV Covers : Trailer Covers : Boat Bimini : Golf Cart Covers : SafeGuardCovers.com

SafeGuard Premium Bimini - 6' x 46" x 67-72" in grey obviously.

I'm right at 6' and I can stand straight up under the middle bow.... It's a definite upgrade from the orginal in that regard. I might look into trying to see how to attach a side curtain for side sun issues..... Has anyone else done that? or have any pics they can share?

The shinny aluminum is real Purdy. Side curtains could be made real easy with some similar material, a little sew on Velcro or snaps, and a sewing machine.

i haven't done that yet but will be. low angle sun on the Sea of Cortez is brutal. i figure i'll add some hanging Sunbrella flaps along the sides of existing bimini, prolly some PVC pipe chunks (need to cut em so they don't interfere with folding) sewn into lower hem to keep em weighted in place and some nylon strap and velcro to tie up out of the way when not needed.

Ordered new aluminum splashwell tubes.... Hopefully install is smooth this weekend if they arrive by Friday... Moving forward.. jsut a little slower than I'd like.. but thats the way it goes usually.. I don't like doing stuff twice, nor do I like to have my work look like carp...
More pics as we progress...

Alllllll rightttty THEN! I got the transom in the boat. All new stainless hardware with 4200 in all the holes and bolts. Also got the splashwell all sealed up with some good ol 4200... Got the splashwell all taped up and ready to shoot paint. Maybe tonight! Then get to hanging the motor off of it. Got all the new SS hardware for the mounts as well as the new water pump kit with new impeller. I'm hoping this will be all thats needed for this boat this year. I wanna get the big Chiefain back in the shop... SKEWW!!! :eyebrows:

we must all be cold blooded. amazing how our progress seems to accelerate when the water liquefies.

you are one forward thinkin dude, SMG....using 4200 instead of 5200 out of compassion for the next guy to restore your boat, in 70 years or so. great progress!

Re: 1973 16' Starcraft Super Sport new to me

Allrighty.. Broke out the el cheap depot HF HVLP gun and mixed up a ratio of 4:1:1 (Paint:Thinner:hardener) Rusto Sail Blue I think it's called. Here is a look at the first coat before I had to get out to little league game last night. Thought it looked pretty good. I thought I was doing a killer job on the priming job but I can see that I didn't do it good enough and prolly should have smoothed out that 4200 better.. That is the only part I'm not really all that impressed with my work. Anyways.. Check em OUT! BOO YEAH. I'm thinking it's gonna look kinda silly with that splashwell all bright with a different color but hey.. I wanna get out on the H2O...

you know the hordes in Bayliner Capris and similar modern disposaboats will still be drooling over your boat. and you'll still get old guys come up to you at a gas station and tell you about the SC they used to have. not a one will say anything about your non-matching splashwell............

Alrighty here she is boys. Not bad, Not Perfect.... . But just perfect enough for what I'm happy with. I'm certainly ready to get the motor back on the transom. that is the to do for tonight. Then hopefully get the controls put on throughout this week. Lower unit water pump following.
