Re: 1972 Silverline Comoro 17T I/O Restration

Tomorrow is the day the Engine takes a vacation from the hull. After being together non stop for 37 years, ... They need a well deserved break from each other .... ;)

All unplugged, unbolted and ready to be pulled. ... Whoo-Hoo! :D

Today I finished with mounting the Engine and Outdrive on the stand. Bracing with straps and nails. It has turned out better than I ever expected it to be. Very easy to roll around on my butchered up / uneven driveway, and it is more stable than I thought it would be. The next step is to remove the rest of the transom mounting garb in between the two and to build the cover. Work on the boat will continue while the stand is being wrapped up.

The Engine can be looked over and worked on, ... almost as if you were dreaming! :p

Squid Billy,
That engine outdrive stand looks pretty good.
Great idea. I wish I had put mine on wheels.:(
Have a great day.

Hello Guy's,

I was wondering how you go about making sure the Engine is mounted in the proper place, ... height and angle.

As you can see from the previous photos, there is nothing usable to referencer from as all the wood is rotted and broken down.

Everything is to be replaced and I want to make sure I get the motor in the proper place.

Squid Billy,
They make an alignment tool to make sure your alignment is correct. I have seen them on ebay for under $100.
I plan to get one when I start to put mine back together.
I also put a board across the hull and marked the board and hull with reference lines to get it back close.
Good luck

Thanks! I know about the tool, and aligning the Engine. I was talking about the location in the boat. I will need to remake everything in the hull.

Re: 1972 Silverline Comoro 17T I/O Restoration

Squid Billy,
I knew that's what you meant.
I was also talking about before I removed my motor mount, I laid a board across the boat and marked th Haul and the board to keep the same reference point, then dropped a level down to motor mount hole and marked the height and location on the board. With that I should be able to find the correct location when I start putting it all back.
I had to replace everything above the hull too.
Hope this clears up what I meant .
Take care.

Re: 1972 Silverline Comoro 17T I/O Restoration

Yes Bob, ... I understand now, ... but unfortunately, I think it's to late for me, everything was sagging or crushed from being rotten. :( Thanks for the heads up though. ;)

On a lighter note, ... I think I have a gimbal housing that will work! Whoo-Hoo!

Im, ready to remove the cap and finish the inside demo. Thank Neptune, ... for the Skanky Beast. It's my boat except mine is an I/O and the Skanky is an outboard. Great stuff there!

This weekend I should have the cap off.

Squid Billy,
Glad to hear you found a gimbal housing. :D
Sorry to hear about the sagging thing. I have the same problem, me not the boat. :p
I hope you have some help getting that cap off the boat. Mine was a bit of a bear. The balance point was further forward then I thought. My cap also went all the way to the deck on the front part.
Oh well , I'm sure you will manage. I have faith in ya. :D
Have a good week.

Re: 1972 Silverline Comoro 17T I/O Restoration

Well it's been slow going with me doing this all by myself. But there has been progress none the less.

I had to grind off several thundered screw heads because the boat MFG. thought they could save several cents by using steel screws instead of stainless screws, ... go figure ...

After that, I had the pleasure of removing about the same amount of staples.

Then came the heavy lifting of the cap by myself ... AGRrrrr ... damn friends never seem to be around when you have something heavy to do ... ;)

Squid Billy,
Hey looks like you are making some progress.
I also know what you mean about working alone. I do it all the time. I do have a little tractor with a front end loader, that helps me a lot.
Could not have gotten this far without it.

Re: 1972 Silverline Comoro 17T I/O Restoration

Not much progress on the removing the cap so far this week so I am trying to line up a few folks to help me lift it off and take it to the side yard this weekend if not sooner.

BUT ...

The transom plate that I got needed a little work done on it to clean it up. I was going to do it myself, but I didn't feel like removing the paint and repainting it. Since I have to much work on my hands I called a couple of my vendors and one of my powder coater's said they would chemically strip, sand blast and powder coat it for $75.00 out the door.

Guess what I picked up today .... ?

Merry Christmas to ME! :D
