Wow !! Thats funny on the color call, for the boat . I'm also painting it red and black, also white. Black for the bottom , Red for the sides, White on top. Once were done well have to race and see who's paint go's faster.(LOL)

It is a race! how big is your motor? I know my boat will fly with that 135hp!

I'm gonna go as big as possible. Elevation in Colorado plays hell with Horse Power.

Question:

I am getting ready to wrap my decking before it goes down. What kind of fiberglass mat should i use? I have used that cheap stuff in little packets and it just peels right off. is there a better product out there?

Love to see the project coming along... wanted to ask you if you have the original fuel tanks still? My boat has dual tanks, and they are original... makes me nervous about corrosion, but they look good on the outer surface.
Did you mess with your tank/s at all?

I do not have the original tanks. I have a friend who is a metal fabricator and builds gas tanks for huge fishing charters. He has told me he will make a aluminum tank for my boat for pretty cheap. So when the time comes I will have that done.

I have a lot of work to do still, rip up the foam, replace the stringers, new foam, lay down the deck, sanding and painting the whole boat, new carpet, complete rewire, getting the motor running, it is going to take a while to get it all done. I would love to see some pics of your boat. feel free to post them if you want.

Don't really have too many good pics yet, but I did find an old ranger ad...
and a couple pics from the Craigslist ad where I found it,... and a couple of
shots of the crazy wiring that is now all pulled out...
The boat is white with brown/gold metalflake top cap... I was able to get it shined up pretty good with a 3m rubbing compound with polish and a WHOLE lot of elbow grease (ok, ok... not that much elbow grease, but about a half dozen foam rotary polisher pads...:p)
These are clickable thumbnails... (not sure if that's obvious in the final post or not)

Thanks, it's coming... I just looked up Stanwood on Google maps... I live about 65 miles up the I-5 from there... after the rigs are in order... we should meet on Whatcom and see how they fly...

Skilet,

sounds like a plan! I would deffinetly meet you up there and spend the day fishing on the lake!

When you get some better pictures make sure to post them.

I am hoping to have this boat wrapped up by march 31st.

Re: 1972 Ranger Bass Boat Restoration Project

I have a late 80's Foxcraft bass boat haul that I am currently re-doing. Got the hull for $250 with trailer and put a 70hp Johnson on it. My friend sank it so all the electronics had to be re done. It is fish worthy finally and is ready for cosmetic upgrades! I will post pics soon! Reading stories like yours is truly inspirational with all the neat ideas!! I can not WAIT to get into it. I just ordered all new seat pedestal sets, lights, switches, batteries, fuses, trolling motor. Fishes good but I want it to LOOOK good!! I will be starting my own thread Thursday!

And hey, I am only 19.

Re: 1976 Ranger Bass Boat Restoration Project

Last night i got the deck wrapped in fiberglass. this morning i laid it in the boat and screwed everything down. I decided to go get a sheet of 3/8 plywood and lay it over the top just to have a extra stout deck. So i got all that cut out and laid in the boat. I used a marine silicone to seal all the seams and once it is dry and I am going to glass the top part of the deck. It is solid as a rock! I am really liking how it is turning out.

Once i get the last of the deck glassed, I am going to start painting the boat before carpet goes down.

I am still hoping to be on track for the Nidabond pour on sunday or monday of next week, but I might get called into work this weekend so we will see what happens.

anyway, here are the pics.

Well got the top part of the deck covered in resin. I was going to be a little short on the matt, so I went ahead and just covered the it with several coats of resin. I can always go back and add the fiberglass matt if i need to. but since the under part of the deck is completely wrapped i think i should be good to go for a long time.

here is the pic.

Last night got my garage cleaned out and the boat ready to go in, and then my father called. He had a bay in his shop open up and says i can use it to finish the boat, so i am going to load it back on the trailer and take it over there.

Got the Ranger and Campion moved over to my dad's shot. I got another layer of resin laid down in the ranger, the floor is now ready for carpet. I patched 1 small spot on the bow of the boat, and have a little more sanding to do on that. Tomorrow gonna be picking up some rustoleum paint and starting that painting process.

Here are the pics.
