1972 Johnson Seahorse 9.5 hp

Can anyone tell me if the prop shaft oil seal can be replaced without droping the lower unit? I'm thinking it can be carfully drilled and pulled. Then a new one slipped on with the shaft in place. What kind of sealant should the seal be bedded in? Thanks.

Never tried it, let us know how it works.
You don't have to pull the lower unit, you can flip the engine upside down and remove the skeg, but if the water pump hasn't been replaced for a while it could also be done when you have the lower unit off.

Drop the lower unit. You'll save yourself a lot of grief. It's not hard.

Thanks for the info. It's more a time thing than difficult thing. Once I drop the unit I'm going to want to do more work. For now I'd rather just replace out the seal if I can. Either way is there a particular sealant I should bed the new seal in? Thanks
