1972 Johnson 9.5hp seahorse

I need some assistance<br />I have a 1972 Johnson 9.5 seahorse short shaft outboard<br />I just bought it and got it home.<br />I got it started and running quite well. <br />the problem I have is it runs well without the engine cover. As soon as I install the engine cover the engine slows down and stalls. it is like i am choking off the airflow<br /><br />Any suggestions<br /><br />Jon

Hi Jon<br /><br />Chances are that the exhaust is leaking, check the exhaust cover plate and the power head gasket.

9.5s are known for bad exhaust donut.
