1972 johnson 6hp wont recoil rope

I have a 6r72d 6hp outboard that I just picked up. I did a search but keep coming up with broken rope topics. the problem im having is the rope wont recoil in when I pull start it. it has the vertical style recoil. where do you think I should start with diagnosing. is there a common part that causes this? thanks

The rewind spring is either broken or gummed up with old oil. Take the entire assembly off and see if a shot of WD40 or carb cleaner frees it up. Otherwise find instructions on how to replace the spring (it can get away from you and possibly cause an injury).

so removing the assembly should cause the spring to come out? if the oil doesn't free it up how do I replace the spring? ill do a search and see what I come up with.thanks

Working on 3 ( or is it 4 ) of these motors now.----May require that you remove the starter assembly for inspection and reassembly.---Also the intake manifold and bracket.----------These springs are quite good and reliable, but easy to mess up when a novice works on them.

You will need to know by how many turns to pretension the spring when fitting it. Its in the manuals

just in the garage and was poking around the recoil. if I pull the rope out it doesn't even attempt to retract at all. I manually retract the rope onto the reel and there is absolutely no spring pressure. im going to take it apart and see whats going on but looking around online it seems these motors were pretty much the same from mid to late sixties on. am I correct or is it they look similar in the parts they share but are not interchangeable. I went to see the manual online for the how to on the spring and it looks like the reference is to a late sixties motor.

I am working on 3 or 4 of these motors now, own a few more too.-----The recoil is the same from 65 up the the last ones built in 79.---They did add an interlock in the later years.------It will not be easy to install the spring into it's proper place with the recoil installed on the block.----Best to remove the works from the block.------These motors when in good shape will run very nice indeed.----The old saying---" they do not make them like this anymore " applies to these motors.

ok I got it figured out. someone had unbolted the lower plate on the recoil that the spring locks in. they bolted it in back in 180 degrees out. got it t back together and recoiling now
