1972 Glastron v164 trim gauge

I just bought a 1972 Glastron v164. It has been rebuilt but the trim gauge does not work. It has the original 3.0 Mercruiser 140 and it runs great. But I am having a hard time finding information about how to fix the trim gauge. Does anyone know anything about how the sender, sensor, whatever works with this I/O systems?

This is my first boat, it looks really nice and runs good on the water. I would prefer to fix this trim gauge but all I find is Alpha One information.

This is a Mercruiser Stern Drive 120/140 SN 3417809, it does not have holes for the small sender sensor on the outdrive. Any advice on how to find the sensor or a reference to a place that may know?

the gauge and sender testing information are in the factory service manual.

most likely the trim sender on the drive is bad, they only last a few years.

The one you need is hydraulic and operates a rheostat that moves the trim gauge.
There is one for sale on e bay @ $45.00. The part #s 4818&56046.
It called “hydraulic trim sender“ it is 2 parts. it is connected hydraulically between the pump and the reverse lock valve on the low pressure side.

Failing all that…do what us old school guys have always done…look out the back, listen and feel what the boat is doing or reacting like, with trim adjustment. Not sure I’ve ever needed the use of a trim gauge to be honest. Despite having them on two of the boats currently. Gauge won’t tell you what your eyes and ears will. All the best

Failing all that…do what us old school guys have always done…look out the back, listen and feel what the boat is doing or reacting like, with trim adjustment. Not sure I’ve ever needed the use of a trim gauge to be honest. Despite having them on two of the boats currently. Gauge won’t tell you what your eyes and ears will. All the best
I just removed mine to install the A/F gauge.

That’s about the most manly reason for doing away with the trim gauge, I’ve ever heard. Fair play to you sir ! I thought I was good until reading this..when I replaced the horn rocker switch, for a 12v outlet to power my beer fridge…your example takes the prize though..I must do likewise 💪🏻

I have not have good look finding the service manual for this boat. With wonderful Google I found out that the v164 was how Glastron introduced the stern drive system. It's my first boat and it's been in the water. While underway I don't feel I need the gauge but it would be nice to have it while being by the loading dock.
I found places online that say they have the manual, some have a missing link or out of stock. Other look like a scam and I stay away from them. Do you know a reliable source I could find this service manual?

By the way I like the 'welcome aboard' because I am a former US Navy sailor and that's one of the first things you hear when you get to your boat. Little you know as a boat what lies ahead when you check in with the quarter master lol

Thank you for providing the part numbers. That helped me a lot. Unfortunately I was not able to find those at ebay. But thanks to your part number information I was able to find a lot more information. So thank you very much.

It looks very similar to what I have. Thank you for confirming. I was not exactly sure what everyone was talking about. I attached a picture of what I have. I hope I did it right.

Thank you. I agree with you on the little experience I have. I had no choice. I just played with the trim until I got a smooth ride. I don't know what to compare to but I didn't have splash and there was no bumping once I felt comfortable with it while on the water. I was able to get it to 40mph which the original marketing material claimed a top speed of 39 mph.it was smooth. I was able to cruise on choppy waves at Cheney reservoir in Kansas at 20 to 30 mph very smoothly.
However I would like to get the trim gauge working.
The guy I bought it from said it was not working. Still I think I got a good deal so I am happy with the boat. Engine has been cool, no water inside. Little splash except when I was doing it wrong lol.

Sounds like a great wee package you got yourself. Like some of the older Glastron. Big fan. Enough to have a very rare UK made Roger Clark built cvx16. She has a big merc v6 2 stroke on the back of her. Just coming up for 40 year old soon.

Glastron boats were used in “Live And Let Die” stunts that were filmed here in Louisiana. The Jet boat scene where Rodger Moore crashed the wedding scene was the second one. The day before he hit a tree and knocked out his 2 front teeth on the steering wheel, so a set of teeth had to be made for the rest of the filming.
