Re: 1972 chris craft seasport

Well for anyone who has read this here is a follow up. My 72 chris craft is now running the lower stern partially seized up. So got a new one, new impellar, new hoses for manifold and started it up. Ran for the weekend but now i lost fwd gear runs great backwards. Sometimes i can put it in fwd gear and it will catch but most of the time it won't any one have any ideas?

No idea on your drive, but it doesn't sound like your motor is getting any oil/pressure.

If its an OMC electric shift G/C then check for voltage from the shift switch then broken drive spring in gear case.

If the carb is flooding itself, you have a bad float or it's out of adjustment. No amount of cleaning will help you. You need to get a rebuild kit and do it up!

Take your time when rebuilding a carb. Don't try and do it in 5 min. Take it apart on a clean workbench and take plenty of digital photos of every sub-assembly as is sits when taken apart. Get a gallon can of carb dip at Autozone to clean the metal parts of the carb in. Don't place rubber, plastic or other non-metal parts in the dip. Use toothbrushes not any type of metal brushes on the carb. Then blow-out with compressed air. You will not believe what a difference a rebuilt carb can make on an engine.

did I read correctly you "melted" a spark plug? If so, That's a SERIOUS indicator of a MAJOR problem....DETONATION. DO NOT run the engine until the cause is ascertained! (If it will run)

Re: 1972 chris craft seasport

engine runs great no more melt downs on plugs which is good but set for a long while (4yrs to be exact) cleaned engine out as good as i could. Did check float out in carb yes it does need to be replaced the guy that cleaned it or rebuilt it did not replace the float so it will be replaced this week. Lower stern fwrd drive is going to be replaced this week also. So hopefully my boat will be back up and running this weekend. thanks to all that has sent replies. Thanks the old boat is coming back to life!
