A guy was selling a boat with one in my area, a few months ago. WHile I know about Stingers, I never knew that the '72 65hp comes in that version. I did some surfing and sure enough, it did.
That link is for 1980 and newer models, but the ES does stand for electric start. The 65ES72 Johnson is a 15" shaft motor and the 65ESL72 is a 20" shaft motor. I really don't know how many of the short shaft models were sold, but there are certainly a few of them around. The 2-" shaft model was/is much more common, though.
I just remembered that I have a photo of the Stinger version of the '72 J65 that I mentioned being for sale, earlier in this thread. Here is it, in all of its reddish-orange "glory!"
