Hi All,
I've been lurking and reading for a few weeks now.;)
I have come across a free boat (1971 Winner Bimini 17' - no trailer or motor).
The kids and I have been cleaning her up so I can make a decision if I want to restore her or not.
If I do decide (which I probably will) I'll be asking quite a bit of q's so I just wanted to thank you all in advance.
I'll post some pics in a little while.
Thanks again.

She's pretty rough. IMHO you have your work cut out for you.

Just for starters and rough estimates here is what I THINK you are looking at...

Total rebuild of Deck, Stringers and Transom Time and Cost 100 hrs $1, 500
Total Re-Do of Interior for Seating 20 hrs - Minimum $100- Maximum $1,500
PROBABLE PAINT job on BOAT 50hrs $150.00
Electrical for Guages and Motor 10 hrs - $150.00
Purchase Good used 60 hp Motor with controls and install 5 hrs - $650.00
Purchase and fix up trailer 10 hrs - $250.00

You CAN do it, and there IS plenty of help here on the FORUM, just wanted you to KNOW what lies ahead for you and the kids. It is a LOT of work but it IS rewarding and can be a lot of fun. Remember that BOAT stands for Bust Out Another Thousand.

I'm just sayin...:D

I'm going to pull up some of the deck and see what that's like. I'll then make my decision.
Thanks for the reply and rough estimates woodonglass.:)

Might sound weird but some SnoBowl Toilet bowl cleaner will do WONDERS on cleaning your fiberglass. And Oven Off Oven Cleaner will get rid of any carpet glue etc.

I'm just sayin...:D

I can just barely make out the tag that is on the interior panel on the driver's side, right in front of where the controls go. Could you possibly take a close up photo of that and send it to me? Mine is missing and I'm not sure of the load capacity of the boat or max hp on the motor.
thanks

Re: 1971 Winner Bimini 17' Tri Hull

Thanks! I never saw one anywhere on my boat. I always wondered what it looked like.

BTW, I see one difference in our boats. In the bow of mine there is one large compartment in between the 2 small compartments. Mine has 2 drains in the large one and 1 drain in each of the smaller ones. The small ones drains are tied together with a hose that tee's into a catch tub that is under the center compartment. The center compartmant drains into that tub also, and there is a pump in there that has a tube going to a thru-hull fitting on the starboard side of the boat. I was told the smaller compartments are live wells, but I think if anything they migth be baitwells. I haven't tried them out yet.

You're welcome.

I noticed that too. From what I can see, those drains on mine are draining into the boat. Once I pull the cap, I'll get some pics of what is actually in there.

I did pull up some of the deck and did see 2 of those air jugs. Also came across a mouse nest too! :D

Just a note, the stringers in that boat are not wood covered in fiberglass. They are hollow fiberglass boxes, filled with those bottles. No wood to rot!:D

Just tonight, my wife said" Well we will not be able to get any supplies for the boat until next spring":(

Once I get the cap off, transom out and all the sanding and grinding done I'll see where we are at. ;) :)

Re: 1971 Winner Bimini 17' Tri Hull

I have a question on foam.

When I took off the side panels, there were 2 strips of foam that was under the shelf.

http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx320/fstorm08/1971%20Winner%20Bimini/IMG_1729Custom.jpg

The total dimensions of both lengths together is 70"L x 3"W x 6"H.

I was thinking of making a mold out of wood (with the inside dimensions mentioned above) and lining it with waxed paper and using the pour foam to make new pieces.

So my two questions are this:

1. Do you think the foam would stick the the waxed paper?

2. What weight and how much pour foam would I need to make 2 of these (one for port and one for starboard)?

Thanks in advance for any insight you all might have.

I think I'd just use treated lumber.

I would just go to Lowes and use the Pink or Blue foam sheets and laminate some pieces together.

I'm just sayin...:D
