Re: 1971 starcraft holiday I/O rebuild

Looks like things are coming apart great for you, glad you don't have to fight everything like I did. Just about every bolt snapped off trying to get the inner mount off, dang corroded aluminum bolts too. Hope yours are all easy going.

Yeah I would get rid of the MC1 outdrive set up and get a newer donor boat with an Alpha. I'm there with you on the 4.3 MC, but I was torn with a the allure of a 5.7 MC and the thought of through the transom exhaust. Yeap I'm one of those guys, not a big fan of gutless hissing little motors, even my wife's little Buick has a Northstar V8 in it that takes premium fuel only.

Doing it right is the best plan, it's all about your eye when it comes to how she looks in the end.

Grandad, you have got an astounding level of skill and attention to details. Your boat is amazing.

Watermann, how does the chief compare in size to a holiday? obviously both in question here are 18ft length is the chief a wider? Also interested in seeing the motor mount plan for the v6. The idea of a 5.7l in this lightweight tinny is interesting it would certainly make it a rocketship, but may be detrimental to the family friendly factor.

Great looking project Holiday. When removing or installing the out drive you must be in full forward, this points the shift slide straight ahead. When your installing the drive you either need someone to hold pressure on the prop or wrap a bungee on it, otherwise the drive will not stay in gear.

The Chief has a 90" beam and the Holiday is 84", so not a whole lot of difference. The mount for the V6, is just a double up front with the same type of wood support between the stringers as an inline. Of course all the torque is delivered to the transom and the front mounts just support weight.

Yeap an old aluminum boat turned into a speed boat isn't really something a family needs, I agree there alright. I'm betting that 205 HP V6 will make her scoot past many on the lake tho.

Edit: forgot to add the iboats specs link. http://boatspecs.iboats.com/Starcraft_Marine/bp/20br1466

No progress........and sadly not sure if there will be any progress on this. Its being mothballed untill spring at least for a few different reasons... We just bought a house this past spring and while I have the space for working on things time is at a premium with other things that should be/need to be done or addressed. And the more I think about our boating the closed bow would become a pain. And lastly but of high importance. Wife isnt sure she and the kid can be happy and feel safe in a 40+ year old boat...Truth be told she wasn't happy to see it sitting in the driveway when it followed me home. In fact while talking this last weekend she suggested she felt better about my spending more for a turn key newer boat than a project of this size, possibly next year once we get a couple things settled and behind us.

Sooooo mothballs for now, and lots to consider. If I abandon it alltogether I will give the Starmada notice via the starcraft forum if anyone is interested in the hull. If someone is really interested hit me with a PM so I can keep you in mind.

Where on the planet are you and this Holiday project located again?

Just in case a "friend" may want to pick up where you leave off:becky:

Carp, anybody heard from BoatNut lately? He's out your way......

Once torn into & rehab'd, your Admiral should have no concerns about your family using a 40yr old boat. You're already shopping for a replacement motor. The boat can be made to float. The critical systems will all probably need an update too: Electrical, steering, engine management, fuel & etc...

For now, wrapped up for a big sleep is better then the alternative. Send your Admiral over to look thru some of the completed projects in the SC section:
Starcraft Rebuilds and Restorations

Not sure which finished project is most VINTAGE, but there are many examples at least as old as yours that get run regularly & used in all sorts of waterways & varying weather conditions.

I'm sorry to hear your project has been side lined, I hope it's not permanent. Keep us posted.

The admiral and I have come to the conclusion that this old starcraft truely is not for us. So I am declaring the project dead. I know there are rules about selling on here, so I won't try but it has been made availible on craigslist.

Some day I would really like to do a project but now just isnt the time. Back to lurking......

Best of luck & there are quite a few former boat members that remain fairly active on the forum.

In fact I think BajaUnderground just bought a new to him project boat after a bit of lurking while boat-less.........
