1971 Mercury 7.5 hp tiller assembly

I have a 1971 Merc Mark 75 7 1/2 hp. I need to completely disassemble the tiller assembly. I have learned here that this is done from the end with the gear, not the rubber handle. I am told there is a pin holding the gear to the shaft, and once I drive the pin out, the gear will come off and the whole assembly will slide apart. I have studied this thing for over a week, and can find no way that one could even see if there is a pin in the gear, much less drive it out. There are two reciprocal holes in the housing, that may be there to drive the pin out. If, and that is if, this is correct, how would you locate the pin? If the holes have nothing to do with the pin, how would you see it, much less get it out? Rookie here.
