I am trying to install a lower unit on a 1971(?) Johnson 85 Javelin motor. The water pump has two ports for two water tubes. I need to know how to align the tubes with the water pump while sliding the lower unit into position and bolting it back on while doing the other ten things that need to happpen at the same time with only two hands and a nose!!!!!

I am guessing you probably figured this out by now but for others I am attempting the same thing on my 1972 125hp 'Rude.

There should have been two plastic tubes that would have possibly fallen off of the copper tubes when you removed the lower unit. They may still be on the copper tubes so you might want to look up at them with a flash light to see if they are still up there. The plastic tubes go into the guide that is screwed down to the top of the water pump housing. If it is the same as my 72 rude there is a short and a long one and according to the parts blow up diagram short goes to port. These tubes will push down flush with the grommets on the water pump housing and will give you space to hand allign the copper tubes so they slide down the plastic tubes and into the grommets.

I am fighting with these now and had to call it a day yesterday when it started to pour. In my opinion the long tube should be about 3 inches longer and there should be two long ones instead of a long and short tube.
