Sprayed water though the brass tube and it came right out the back of the exhaust housing assembly.

I did the lower unit in water and turn with a cordless drill. I had a little bit of pump out of the grommet but it was pretty pitiful. It should pump pretty substantially even with a drill correct?

Make sure your impeller is OEM . If your are sure everything is correct, check your thermostat.

It only goes up a couple of inches.

Ok; that’s about what I’m seeing. I think that pretty much leaves either my grommet is bad or I didn’t have it hooked up right left

What condition is the Pump Housing, and Bottom Plate in? If these are worn, in certain areas, all the new Impellers in the world will not get them pump water very well

Both are in pretty good shape. No damage to report on either

Hard to make a mistake on assembly of the pump.----They always worked for me.-----So is the impeller a factory original part or something else?----Is the intake screen behind the prop clear and not collapsed ?

Oem impeller, and intake isn’t blocked. I checked other day.

Now we’re not starting. Looks like I’m gonna have that full rebuild after all

Sanded and set the points, put in some hotter plugs. It’s a runner now. Think I missed an orifice cleaning carb/ will only run with choke on. Water pump is pumping but not super well. Im going to order a brand new water pump and try that again. Leaking lower unit oil in my garage. Going to reseal all of those as well.

Keep an eye on those 'Hotter Plugs', they could end up causing Detonation, as they won't shed Heat as well as the specified plug would
When resealing the Lower Unit, don't forget about the Shift Shaft Seal, and the Washers under the Drain and Vent Screws

I woud do a pressure test if you can (used soapy water spray) to see if you have bad seals. otherwise new nylon washers may... solve the problem

check the small shifter (phipps) screw for leaks

on my last reseal of a 5.5 I used a bit thicker spaghetti and it worked out ok.

it was.103 or .113 ..not certain :-(

I put J8C instead of J6C plugs. I’ve read both are the standard plugs. Someone with more knowledge than I will know which is accurate.

I’ll do that soapy water test. I put new nylon washers on last night and still had leaks today. Probably 99% chance my prop seal is ruined. Has a big glob of fishing line wrapped behind the propeller and a bunch of sand in the lower unit.

Back in the day we had J4J ( J4C ) for motors with a thermostat.----J6J ( J6C ) for motors without a thermostat.----No idea why anyone would want to run J8C in one of these simple motors.-----The ignitions on these are simple and easy to keep in good condition !

I remember when it was J6J, and Chumpion has made some changes to how they scale the Plugs. I always preferred AC DelcoM4C as our Plug of choice.

The 5 1/5, later becoming the 6hp, had a Thermostat, and was speced with J6J

The 5-1/2 was fitted with a thermostat in 1959 model year.

I am picking up a second parts motor tomorrow for the recoil assembly. It’s cheaper to buy a whole motor than the part. I’m hoping to get a runner out of two frankenmotors

I swapped lower units and I swapped the recoil starter assembly. I also rebuilt the carburetor. Motor starts and runs well. Still not pumping water even in the new lower unit. I pulled water pump out of the other one in hopes it was the LU, somehow this impeller is just toast. New one coming tomorrow then fisherman is going on market place. Really fun rebuild.
