1971 Evinrude fisherman, not pumping water

I still can’t get this thing to pump water. I ran my impeller in a bucket with a drill. Pumps good. I took the thermostat out of the motor and ran it for a minute still not pumping water. I ran a hose through the brass tube and I get water from the brass tube to out the back where it pees. That grommet is good and I made sure nothing was clogged between the water pump/housing/tubing. I’m 100% sure the grommet and the hose are connected. I’m at a loss why it’s not pumping…any more ideas?

wrong base gasket under the power head maybe..... different years different shapes on the 5.5 (uncle of the 6hp fisherman) see pic from vintage outboard.

maybe a wrong base gasket was put under the ph by you or previous owner

I’ve not touched the power head. If I shoot water with my garden hose through the brass hose it will come out the hole on the back of the gear case assembly where the motor pees water. Would this happen at all of the wrong gasket is on the ph?

who knows maybe Racerone...

pee water is not engine cooling water ....different flow path sometimes.
so ??? is this problem something that came up all of a sudden for you or is this a new to you engine that came with a problem.

I would pull the PH and do a colonoscopy on it :)

btw did you ever inspect the lower intake water path to the pump (undert the pump)

On many motors the tell tale water does NOT go through the block.-----Not so on this motor.----Something simple is being overlooked.----Post picture of how you are testing this motor.

I bought this motor as parts motor. It had good compression and turned over nicely, so I wanted to make it a runner. I bought a second parts motor for the recoil and put motor #2s lower unit on motor #1 thinking both of them can’t need new seals.

Check the grommet ( top of the water tube ) in the exhaust housing.

I looked at it earlier. It looks impeccable from where the lower unit is off. Would it be obvious if it was melted or do I need to take the power head off?

Taking the powerhead off ( easy job ) is likely your next step.----There is a blockage somewhere.

Spinning with a drill is a nice feel-good test, but proves very little. Doing that, the pump is submerged in water. In the real world, the exhaust blows the water out from around the water pump and for the most part the pump is operating in air. So, air (exhaust) can enter the intake side of the pump. Make sure the surface of the gearcase where the pump mounts is clean and not damaged. Some sealant there won't hurt either.

And….fixed! She’s pumping really well. I ran water from the thermostat hole down the brass hose for quite a while and it seems to have cleaned whatever was in there out. She’s in great shape now. Thanks to everyone for all the help!
