I have a 1971 Evinrude fisherman that I’m currently bringing back from the dead. I put a brand new impeller on, but it won’t pump any water. Took lower unit off to make sure the blades were in the correct direction and that the water pump had the key. Everything is installed properly. Still no water. Suggestions? Maybe clogged water tube? There was a bunch of sand in the lower unit. I cleaned it really well, but who knows what is up in there. Tons of exhaust/smoke coming out of the peeing out, but no water pumping.

And how would I clean this? Also any other ideas of why it might. It be working. This is a new one for me. Other that the motor is running awesome.

Google search…run water through it or piece of weed wackier hose. Seems reasonable

Try unscrewing the threaded barbed adapter off the block for the pea tube and see if water blasts through there, otherwise remove thermo and then water jackets and head if needed. You could be plugged up.

exhaust or steam ...check pH temps with infrared scanner (cheap tool to have)

pull the thermostast check passages visually for blockages. pull the cyl head check /clean water jackets for blocage

replace cyl head gasket

no blockages under the thermostat. I was able to blow a little air and everything seems to be moving freely. Will remove cylinder head next

Have to be ask if your water level was well above the impeller?
I wish it was that! 100% we’ll above the av plate.

I’ve got a 1984 I’m working on as well both short shafts I’ve been swapping out in the same bucket of water, and it pumped well for like 30 minutes. I know water level is good. I don’t use muffs either

remove the gc & spin the drive shaft in the bucket of water .... make certain water gushes out of the impeller housing... if ok work top side

reinstall GC align the water tube

if not.... check for water restriction into the GC water intake cavity below the impeller housing

There is no telltale fitting on this motor !!----Water must be 8" above impeller in the test bucket.------Or did the copper tube come out stuck in the pump ?----If so on re-assembly the copper tube must first be installed in the exhaust housing.----Then the lower unit is installed.------These cooling systems are very simple.

No telltale fitting that is correct. No water coming out of back the exhaust housing assembly either. Already took apart to make sure water pump housing is hooked up to brass tube. It’s good. Will remove lower unit and pump in bucket of water to see what’s up. Everything appears to be functioning properly just no water coming out.

If you hook up a waterhose on the brass pipe, does the water come out of the thermostat cover? Did the old impeller come out in 1 piece? Rubber gommet on top of the pump housing in proper condition?

Impeller came out in one piece. Rubber grommet on top of pump housing looks pretty good (although I do have a spare I can try) . I haven't sprayed a hose through anything yet, but this is going to be part of my next plan.

If the brass pipe is not correctly in the gommet it can push out the gommet when you bolt the lower unit on. It the brass long enough and not bended? When it is misaligned, it can bend.

I'm sure it is a very simple repair. I debated on even starting this thread, but wondered if there was some weird part or step that I'm missing. Im gonna replace that grommet and try to spray water through the brass tube. Hopefully it fixes the problem.
