Ok the throttle handle is stuck, there are 2 rods, one in the actual handle, it meets gears to another rod that goes further back to a set of gears, this gear some how moves the cam lever, I can move the cam lever about 1/4" by hand and can turn the throttle handle about 1/4" but when I turn the handle 1/4" it is NOT move the cam lever at all. I cannot figure out how to get into the gears to even look at them. My manual does not show this at all.

Motor was running fine all summer, have not ran it since Oct. went out to fire it up and it would not start. I do have fuel coming out of the choke flap on the front of the carb. This motor usually starts 1st or 2nd pull every time, never had a problem and now that I am trying to sell my rig this happens. *LOL*

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

raise tiller handle to expose gears. check for something going on in there:

here is a pic of the back gears, and the throttle? lever:

check the clip at the top, make sure that and the other rod aren't binding.

But I think this would be your problem:

If the carb seized up, this rubber wheel thing could be stuck. (its supposed to rotate, and go back and forth) if it did, that will stop everything.

Re: 1971 Evinrude 6hp 6102E throttle handle stuck

Okay, I found the problem.

The piece you describe was not even able to touch the bigger piece as it woudl not move aorudn far enough. So I traced things back to the lock upa dn found the screw to the Pinion, throttle contraol, I unscrewed the screw adn it fell off in my hands. So now the handle turns freely *LOL* However, now I ahve to find 3 parts which are as follows:

0303107 - Washer, throttle Pinion Evinrude Price - $3.70
0303142 - Pinion, throttle Control Evinrude Price - $34.89
0303951 - Screw, Pinion Evinrude Price - $11.26

I believe the screw that came out of the old one will still work in the new one I would assume.

I have looked on here at Iboats but cannot find the parts I need, Is there somewhere besides Evinrude to purchase these parts maybe cheaper and save some bucks?

Other than Evinrude is this a dealer only part?

Thanks again for all the help.

Are you saying those parts are missing or damaged? I wouldn't replace them otherwise. Your cheapest option is probably ebay, else salvage yard.

I think the best thing to do is remove all the moving parts there and repack them all with fresh grease. Often times, where the bushings go in, the metal corrodes and swells up the plastic harder around the shafts that go into the tiller arm and the other shaft that goes to the gear set.

Agreed. In the first picture, those gears usually bind up the worst.

anyway, this might help:

Re: 1971 Evinrude 6hp 6102E throttle handle stuck

Exactly! Often times I've had to pull those shafts out completely and the little plastic bushings that they ride in and scrape out the corrosion build up in the holes that they reside in. Same with the gear that attaches to the vertical lever on the side of the exhaust cover there. Once you do that and repack new grease, everything works great again.:D

Re: 1971 Evinrude 6hp 6102E throttle handle stuck

Thanks! I will repack them with grease really good when I put them back together. Since the pinion has broke into 2 pieces, I have to replace that and the washer I am sure. Do you think when I pull this all apart to put the new piece in I will have to replace any of the other pieces or should they still be good?

You guys are awesome with your responses thank you.
