1971 800 80HP Mercury won't reverse

Forward works great. In Reverse the prop will turn pretty fast when out of the water but when we put the boat on the lake it wont "reverse" the boat.

I'm having the same issue with my 1969 Merc 1000. I think I found my answer in a response to my post (link below). Read through it, likely a similar issue. Although you may just need to adjust the barrel stop at the end of the cable.
