Re: 1970 Starcraft rebuild

Welcome to iboats Pike, another Michigan Starcraft. Looks like an 18 footer?

Maybe just the angle but seems like the sides are pretty high to be a 16.

The boat looks like it's in decent shape from those photos. Is it a closed bow?

Re: 1970 Starcraft rebuild

Okay, so it looks like it worked so here is alittle on this boat. Bought it back in the summer of 2009 after selling a 12' sea numph with a chrysler outboard. Had alittle cash but wasn't planning on buying a boat anytime soon sincce I went back to college full time. Talking with a lady at work and she mentioned her husband had to sell his boat to pay for some new expenses. Followed her to her house the next day and ended up buying the boat for $600. The boat is a 16' deep V but not sure on what class it is. Came with a bunch of extra pieces which I have sold most of. Also has a decent trailer that needs ane paint job and it has a 40 hp johnson motor that ran last time I fired it up but needs a little TLC. The boat is very sturdy and has no leaks. The only down side was the guy got drunk one night and tried painting the boat the same color as his truck with one shaker spray paint can. 1 can doesn't go to far on a boat this size.

Finally completed school last summer and this winter found some time to start the rebuild. First I ripped up the floor. This winter my father in law and I pulled the transom out and put a new one back in. Next we relpaced the back portion of the floor with 3/4" exterior grade plywood. Next came the big job that might make some cringe but we took the closed bow and used a jig saw and now the boat is an open bow. Rebuilt the floor on the front end and made it a step up and built in a steering console as well. Next we put in a whole new cable steer system. Next we glued gray exterior carpet down on all the new flooring. Since we have slowed down due to more hours at work and my father in law going back to work. Still picking at some small stuff but the next big project is rewiring the cobble job that was in this boat and get hooked back up to the motor and running that again. Installed a couple of cleats today and put in a chair in the drivers area. Once it warms up around here then it is time to look at repainting ths boat.

More pics to follow of the progress as I find time. Hope U all enjoy and if possible can someone tell me what type of starcraft this might be.

If it's a 16' rig then it is probably a Jupiter model. They were ski boats/runabouts with a closed bow.

Here are a few pics looking toward the front. This is after the transom was torn out and replaced. I forgot to get pics of how the boat looked before we tore the dash out and started cutting the bow out. boat pics 008.jpgboat pics 007.jpgboat pics 005.jpgboat pics 006.jpgboat pics 004.jpg

Here is the boat the floor completely removed and washed out. Most of the bow was cut out at this time but we did some more modifications later on and ended up removing more of the bow a couple weeks later. Like the original color?

Re: 1970 Starcraft rebuild

I've never seen a Starcraft with that style splashwell, and the side panel storage is very unique also.:)

Re: 1970 Starcraft rebuild

Notice in the 2nd pic above how there is a new metal piece coming from the upper front floor and connecting to the top. This is where the cable for steering came up and we built a bracket from the bow material to cover it up. We also used the cut out bow material to match up with the inside panel and to help eliminate the sharp edges where we cut the bow out.

Re: 1970 Starcraft rebuild

Huron Angler,
I have done alot of searching on starcraft boats and I have yet to see one with a splashwell like this either. Most are a block style but this one is rounded. This is definitely the original splashwell due to how it was attached to the sides and transom. This is why I wasn't sure on the exact type of starcraft boat this was.

Adding exterior carpet to the deck and new paint for the top.

Re: 1970 Starcraft rebuild

More progress. We removed the inner rub rail and replaced it with 1/8 x 1" aluminum angle. Also removed the big vintage bow light and plan to go to a much smaller one to make room for a future trolling motor to be mounted on the front of the boat. Planning on selling the rub rail, the windshield has been sold and the bow light is already been listed on CL.

A look inside the side console for the cable steering. This took alot of work to redo the cable steering under the floor.

Re: 1970 Starcraft rebuild

Now we started looking at the outboard as well as the wiring for this boat. It is a cobbled mess and will have to recruit a friend to help with the electrical part of the rebuild.

Opening up that bow adds a ton of nice fishing space, sweet!
