Nice score on the console..
I used some bondo on a console I made form aluminum.. The bondo held up, but the paint turned bad after a couple of years..
I will not use it again..
I would use the JB Weld or marine tex.. The marine tex is expense.. Stevecur has a good suggestion on the bondoglass.. I have used it before..

i checked out the usc all metal filler. a little expensive for me at almost $50 a quart. im going to price out the bondoglass.

I worked on sanding the console today and noticed some cracks at the seams. i dont know anyone who welds aluminum so im going to try and use some type of bracket to rivet them to strengthen them.

If you or trying to save money, the bracket would be the best way to go.. A welding shop will cost a lot more..

Ok guys, I think I messed up pretty bad here. I got a die today to chase the threads. We triple checked that it was the right one using the nut from the crank. I started the die, going little by little and backing it off to clean any metal out.

Didn't even think about the fact that the crank is in the power head and attached to the rotating assembly. I got it chased but now I can't get it off! There's nothing to stop the engine from spinning in reverse.

What can I do here?

If you shift the motor into gear and have someone hold the prop with a 2x4 or something till you get the die back off that might work.

it was in gear. thats how i got the die threaded in the first place.

But, CRISIS AVERTED. I pulled a plug, set the piston to half way through the stoke and stuffed the cylinder with rope, that stopped it from making a full stroke. I got it off.

BUT WAIT, theres more. The flywheel i got off ebay doesnt fit.

This is the part of doing restores that no one talks about, its no fun so keep it quiet or you will scare away some of the newbies.:frusty:

Okay so heres todays main update.

First, the thread repair was 100% successful. After getting the die off, the nut threads on there perfectly. :D

I took time while the flywheel is off to clean the points. Thats what got me into this whole mess... having to clean them every year.

Then I noticed that the magnets were rusted a little. Will they be ok?

Then I noticed that the top plastic broke. I have the piece that broke off. Think it will be ok if I glue it back on?

When I started playing around with my controls I noticed that the buttons for fwd-n-rev werent moving, so I investigated. There is a plastic piece that slides with the throttle to stop gear changes at throttle, and that broke. I had no choice but to remove it. Ill just have to be careful that im all the way throttled down before changing gears.

And finally I worked on fabbing up some sheet aluminum for the console I got to cover all the holes from gauges. In retrospect, I should have put the sheet on the back and used filler to smooth it. Its not professional, but it will do the job. I need to come up with a way to make the edges look nicer. And the sheet I got was about 1/2" too small so I had to piece together the bottom right corner. Not too worried because it will be up against the side of the boat anyways.

And finally with regards to the flywheel, my daughter located in 5 minutes what I spent days searching for when I realized it went missing. It was under some leaves on the ground next to where I had parked it. So im going with that.

Tomorrow Im going to fire it once my woodruff key comes in. fingers crossed. I probably wont run it, as I dont have water and am pretty sure ill need to replace the impeller anyways. Just want to make sure it will fire up though.

That motor has to be in water if you want to run it. You can't run it on muffs.

No worries...

I'm hoping to fire it after work today. Gotta clean my tank first though. there's about 1/2 gallon in there, been for 3 years. Should I do something to clean out the tank first after dumping it before filling it again?

On my metal tanks, I removed all the guts, and then used Dawn dish soap and Boiling water, and a 5 foot length of chain to "Shake, Rattle and Roll" the heck out of it. It took several attempts but...The results were good. Got all the Varnish out and the tank was very clean on the inside when finished. I did have to replace the Cork Floats but they work great now. Had the tanks Powder Coated and they Look New!!!
