The Evinrude 50 motor on my boat won't click out of forward, i have pushed the neutral button then the reverse button and niether seem to engage...i'm sure there are several things that could be wrong but, what is a couple of the most common causes of this and would it be wise to start thinking of getting a new motor. I just bought the boat about a week ago.

You have an electric shift system and the default mode is forward should a problem occur. The issue is that either the system has lost +12 volts and/or ground, or there is an issue in the lower unit.

Sorry for sounding like an idiot here, but how would I go about fixing these issues? this is my first boat with a motor that is bigger than a trolling motor and the only guy I ever knew that could work on an engine was my dad and he is incapcitated, again, sorry for sounding stupid about this but, I am willing to learn....just need some help and guideance
