I have a question with my 1970 85 hp evinrude. I was out on the lake and it suddenly stopped. Now it will not start. It's turning over but will not run. I am new to boating and was trying to get an idea on how much this will cost to have fixed. I don't have a manual. I replaced the plugs and battery but still won't run. Any ideas I would appriciate it. Thanks.

It could be a multitude of things ... overheating, lack of fuel, lack of spark, etc. No way to even guess what it would cost without diagnosing the problem(s)!

I assume the boat and motor are new to you ... is this the first time you've run it?

No I have ran it, a few times now. And it always ran good. That day it broke down I had it running for about 10 min then all of a sudden it stopped. I talked to a guy who works on evinrudes and he said its a waste of time to look at it because it is the power pack. Someone else told me it could be the coil?

I don't know how anyone, even an "Evinrude mechanic," could tell what the problem is without doing some tests. Did he do any tests?

No this was over the phone conversation with him. I took the plugs back out. The plugs itself were not dirty but around it was pretty grimmy. I heard if motors get bad gas this happens. How would I get the gas out and how to get it started. How can you tell if a motor is blown?
