1970-80 4.5hp 2stroke evinrude idle prob.

Just bought motor not to long ago, got it home and tried starting, takes like 6pulls then idles for a bit and dies, plugs look good but this is my first motor and suggestions on why it stops running ?

Will it continue to run if you keep pumping the primer bulb? Could be the carb needs to be overhauled.
Can you post the model number so we know exactly what engine you have?

Yes it runs when I pump the bulb, Idk were to find the model number, I looked for it and couldn't find a label

If it will continue to run by pumping the primer bulb, it usually means that you have a fuel pump going out.
Look on the transom clamps for a decal or metal tag, if there is nothing there, look on the powerhead for a silver plug about the size of a quarter and see if there are any numbers on it.

it had an internal tank but was converted to the 6 gal kind, should i take the fuel pump out and replace?

If it only runs by pumping the primer bulb it's a good sign the pump is bad.
