Re: 1970 650 mercury 65hp 4cyl. rebuild

query ,,, if i had a 3cyl. 650 flywheel that looks the same as mine ,can the magnets be changed out to install my set for a 4cyl 650 ? if i can put them in then all i have to do is transfer my timing marks to it aswel this is only if the diameter is the same ... i know im grasping at straws here ...but thats me .. if a little effort helps to get it fixed im in .

Re: 1970 650 mercury 65hp 4cyl. rebuild

I feel bad for you here, I will try to help you out here.

I can not find any info with you're engine serial number, It's not coming up in the system from mercury.

But here is a few links you should take a look at and see if you think this is you're engine, Then see if you can find the part numbers you will need, More then likely they are no longer availabile, But if you can find your part number I might be able to look up the part number and take a look at what dealer out there might have one in stock laying around in the varry back corner someplace, That is as long as the dealer took the time to post their old parts to mercruiser/Mercury. Example here is my guess on what flywheel you will need from mercury in this link. See #4, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...454&bnbr=4&bdesc=FLYWHEEL+ASSEMBLY+AND+STATOR.

Now if that is the part# you need then here is a list of dealers that might have it still.
Number Description
4591A 7 FLYWHEEL

Quantity Dealership City State Country Name Phone Number Last Updated
1 DRY DOCK MARINA SELMA IN UNITED STATES 765-286-4976 01/22/2008
1 CHEEKS MARINE INC ALEXANDRIA LA UNITED STATES 318-448-8300 11/07/2001
1 POWERHOUSE MARINE LA CROSSE WI UNITED STATES 608-784-9580 01/11/2007
3 LES ENT D BEAUCHAMPS STE SOPHIE PQ CANADA 450-438-1041 10/28/2005

Here is the link to try to find you're engine, Let me know if you need me to look any thing up and i will try when i get time.:)

Don't worry about the 'nutcase rip, he has great fun with his less than helpful one liners. He's just raising his post count, nothing more.

As far as this thread, it's still in the Merc Forum. There is a redirect in the prop forum, but it will not bump to the top as it will here in the Merc OB forum.

1 band-aid, 1 pot of coffee .
I made my own flywheel wrench (see pic ).
I installed the timing belt ( Big thanks to George from Burlington .)
new flywheel is installed .
( thanks to those who suggested EBAY I found the flywheel , a starter plus selinoid, fuel pump plus extra hoses ),
timing is set up . 1/2 tooth off as the book says.
next question : TORQUE SETTING
I have read through my manual but can not find the torque setting for the 8 5/16 small center bolts on the flywheel hub all I found was a torque setting for the main crank bolt of 65ft lbs .. since the previuos owner must have made this error and this is the reason the flywheel broke . I need to find the specs for them .

Then , as everyone knows ya start lookin at stuff and ya find more things
ta fix.
WIRES .
Some of the engine wiring needs to be redone , ie: choke wire is powder speaking of the choke; the selinoid , it's full of light brown corrosion , Is this normal for a marine engine ?
With a deeper look I see more wiring needs to be replaced , I want to rewire these from the main plug . looks like i'm going to need a few feet of the different gauges and colours in there.
any hints here will help ..

If you buy wire... Make sure it Marine grade (tinned) Avoid automotive wire and auto connecters. :eek:I'd be looking for OEM parts first.
Hope that helps.

1970 650 mercury 65hp 4cyl. rebuild up date need some answers

1970 650 mercury 65hp 4cyl. rebuild up date need some answers

ok people , its been awhile since i had time to work on the big merc ,

i did get a new flywheel and new bolts for the hub assembly ,

after i put everything together i started to work on the flywheel hub.
I then started to torque the new #8 bolts to 60lbs. in sequence as instructed in my manual .
One of the new bolts snapped !!!
so...

being the calm, cool, collected guy i am

i removed everything and started over.
Thinking the old locktite should be cleaned out
chase the threads with a new tap.
another set of new bolts,
same instructions as directed
then SNAP! chittttt !!!!!
so here is were i need some advice

my bolt torque chart says these bolts should handle 65 lbs - 70 lbs.

i have looked all through my manual and the torque setting for the 8 #8 bolts that hold the flywheel to the hub assembly are to be torqued to 60 lbs.
i have tried to set all the bolts to 20lbs. then 40lbs. then 60lbs.
but as i got the first bolt to 40lbs it snapped

what am i doing wrong here ??????????

i am using a beam type torque wrench
the bolts are not bottoming out,
they are new grade 8
all the threads are clean
no crossed threads
maybe i got cheap off shore bolts ...

im going to get some new bolts , at a different supplier.

Whoa, not familiar with the actual fasteners in the hub BUT, there is no way that a #8 bolt is torqued to 60ft Ib. Maybe 60in Ib is more realistic.

Are you SURE it is 60 ft Ib that is specified ?

Re: 1970 650 mercury 65hp 4cyl. distributor

ok i have a good distributor from a 6 cyl and need to change it to a 4 cyl distributor because my wires are broken.

i do have SELOC manual do work with,
does any one have any details or hints for this work ? even some thing better than what i have.

also i have a switch box that looks like the epoxy plastic has cracked or expanded out from the inside. is it still ok ?
