First post, but I've been lurking around for a while. I'm new to boating and outboards. I recently bought a project boat, now I am searching for a motor. I've found a 1969 Merc 1000 Thunderbolt, Kiekhaefer edition for $200. Misplaced the serial number, but it started with 257. It has a completely rebuilt powerhead, done last year. I feel like this is a pretty good deal, but I wanted to see if I was making a good investment. Also, there's no power trim/tilt motor included. Is there a newer model tilt/trim motor that I can purchase, and if so what type/kind? Would any tilt/trim motor fit? Thanks!

Well I waited too long and someone else snatched it up. But thanks for the reply! Back to square one in my motor search.

Too bad on that one but it's the type you need, what's wrong with the motor, does it spin? put some oil in the reservoir and switch it on but be careful, if the hoses aren't connected and it works oil will spray out of the bottom fittings.
You could check the brushes and commutator for wear if it doesn't turn.

Oh no, I missed out on the Merc. Now back to looking for a 85-100 hp outboard.
