So I'm starting a new thread so to fill ppl in on what's been going one first I started with a 1970 mercury 500 that came with a boat I bought, well as precaution I also bought a 1969 mercury 500 for parts, I started by trying to figure out why the 1970 what underpowered and wouldn't plane after a compression check and further investigation I found heavy scoring on the number 4 piston. So I decided to try and get the 1969 up and running I spent about a half day replacing the parts I borrowed from it, did a compression check on it first of course they where all around 120 so I put the motor on the boat and hooked up the harness and fuel line, hit the primer bulb and the choke and it fired first turn of the key. It want really loud but sound like it was running ok, so I got to looking around to find out why its so loud and I found a hole in the crankcase cover under carb 2. So my plan is to pull the motor back off and put the 1970 crankcase cover on the 69 but the cover is pretty dirty on the inside, and while I'm waiting for parts in the mail, I want to clean the cover up what should I use to get it looking like new again?
