Bought a 1969 Fethercraft 14 foot boot with 2004 valu-line trailer off craigslist. got it for $550.00 with motor, ore's, new batterie, fish finder, anchor. It was a steal since the trailer was worth that much new. I referbished with 30 hours of prep work and painting in the last 2 weeks. I read lot of forums complaining about paint being a body guy for 8 years i have one thing to say to these people, IF YOU HAVE NO PATIENTS DONT TRY PAINTING !!!! Preping is the most important part if you dont scuff it, the paint will peel!!! if you don't let the paint cure for 3-4 weeks before letting it hit the water It will peel and chip!!!!!! leave it alone when your done !!!!! any way the boat was painted silver looked like crap but was in excellent shape for its age and garage kept.got the boat striped it down of all accessories. cleaned the outside with wax and grease remover, sanded the outside with a heavy duty 3m scuff pad, rewiped it with wax and greese remover, sprayed the inside and outside with rustoleum (Self Etching Primer) 2 coats. gave it a 24 hour drying period to etch the aluminum. re cleaned it again with wax and grease remover. Sanded the primer with a the 3m scuff pad again and recleaned it yet again with wax and grease remover. i painted the inside with a paint called hammered by rustoleum, used brown so it dont show dirt. gave that 24 hours to dry flipped the boat over on horses, painted the outside with VALSPAR IMPLIMENT PAINT. I did not use a hardered I rolled it on I put 4 coats like every four hours giving the other coats time to dry between. This paint needs 3-4 weeks to cure like any oil base paint, oil base paint does not dry it oxidizes. I see alot of people whining it wont dry (well Duh!!!!! its oil base!!! you need to be patient you cant paint it and throw it in the water the next week or you are looking for problems rushing . pictures of the boat curing are attached from the project looks excellent !!! a little paitients and some elbow grease is all it takes my friends....
