So I just bought an old boat with a motor that doesn’t run, used to run last year, I thought maybe carb. It was clean as a whistle as if internals were brand new, didn’t clean much as I also couldn’t find a jet like I would on a old truck carb or lawn mower etc, noting to unscrew and pull out. I pulled apart the full pump and everything seeming fine, no clogged ports and I made sure it was all put back properly and I can see fuel going from the pump to the carb so that checks out. The carb has good vacuum suction as well when I try to start, the top screw on the carb was out 3 turns so I went in and back out to 2 1/2 and spark plugs all have good solid spark. It won’t fire or even sputter, I do get a real nice backfire after a bit. And when I put some gas into the carb it just gets to backfiring.

I also made sure it was in neutral as well and the throttle was on start/as far as it would go in neutral to start.

plug wires going to the correct plugs ?? ... try switching them

post mdl #
old style magneto... easy to service. did you pull the flywheel to check for bad coils. did you service all the electricals 1969 condensers may be RIP....if never replaced

Swaping the plugs onto the other spark plug didn’t work. I have two sets of numbers on the hood cover
18002E and 6132
Serial number on the mounting bracket is
25902D-E06938

Also not sure what these wires are for they go up into the piece below the flywheel

If not reversed at the coils the top plug wire should have a crimped band next to the boot markes TOP. 25902D son of RD models.. easy to service . you will have to check your GC oil for water intrusion.
the impeller should be replaced

Did not pull the flywheel, I just started adjusting the screw on top of the carb, low speed mixture, and it started acting more like it wanted to start but still nothing

maybe just kill wires from the magneto I see small wire connectors where does the other ends go to beyong the connectors. If they sneak back under the mag plate they are probabaly kill wires. which normally end up on a push button kill switch or on an electric starter version they go to the 2 M posts on the starter switch.

If not connected to a push button to disable the ignition you may have problems shutting down the motor

you should confirm the electricals.... condensers will go bad eventually and mess up the ignition. check your plugs to see if you have strong sparks !

depending on theresin used on you coils they may look like this

btw 25902d is shown as a manual start did somebody install a starter needing that solenoid ?? looks strange to me..

experts will chime in

The red and black wires go to where you can see them in the picture for the push start, the two black ones which I’m not sure what they are go to where my finger is pointed

almost looks like somebody cut the kill wires and used the kill button as a new START button hooked-up to a solenoid ...odd .... should have no red wires on a kill button

is this realy a 25902D the name plate rivets look mangled...you have #s galore for a 18hp on the cowl or a 25 hp on the plate ???

post full pictures of the motor and powerhead so experts here with sharp eye can tell yoy what you have.

Yeah I’m not sure honestly, can’t pull flywheel since I don’t have the pulled tool for that.

starter aside.... running involve ignition, fuel delivery, compression
assuming compression is ok you will need to check fuel delivery from tank to cylinders. ....pump check , carb cleaning, filters etc...

start with a complete carb clean up

you will have to check each and do some reading from Leroy's as a guide

ok more awake..this a.m.
yes 2 blacks going under the FW are kill wires to shut down the engine. they should go to a normally open push STOP switch !

both coils look decent. ..changing condensers may help and a good clean -up on points if you do not want to spend extra $$$ see timing video
