The high reading on #2 is unusual, but I'm not sure what the normal compression should be. The manual will have the info.

OEM is 140 PSI indeed # 2 is high

Nice score FreeBay, always nice to find a good deal like that one.

Check out North Beach's Liquid Limo thread when you get a chance.

He restored a Sunchief that's pretty similar and did one heck of a job:)

Welcome to the Starcraft fleet!

Re: Picking up a 1968 Holiday Deluxe, boat complete, all original barn find!

Ok,

Going to have to admit and show my ignorance here...

How do I get to the bellows to check them? Should I be able to see them or do I have to drop the lower unit... errr... sterndrive? Again, this is my first inboard so I am a little lost.

It was very hot this weekend so I only messed with the boat for a short time. I did pull the fuel line off the carb and hook it to a portable tank I had because I wanted to try to start the engine for my own curiosity. It took a couple of shots of starting fluid but low and behold it fired up on the third try. It ran ok. I only ran it for a few minutes but it didn't stall. It seems to have a random miss. The plugs look good. The cap, rotor, and wires look good. So I figure maybe the points need some attention? The carb looks amazingly clean so I might have gotten lucky there. The last time this boat was in the water that I know of was in 06.

I did get the hydrolic trim rams to work. It was very low on fluid. I just hope the kid I got it from didn't do any pump damage by running it almost dry.

I hope in the coming weeks to play with it more. It cleaned up well in it's first bath. I need to compound and wax the hull and topsides but, it has a nice shine already just from getting the dirt off.

Anyone know where I can get a direct ignition kit to eliminate these points? Also, what experience have you had changing the oil on these motors? What is your preferred method? Do you pump or drain?

Thanks,

Mike, just found this thread. Great find and what a steal. That boat would be worth at least five times that over here. I'm extremely jealous! :D Best way to do the oil change is to get a pump out kit and suck the old stuff out.

PS: Thanks for the Isuzu forum info!

Hey FreeB, bellows are just regular maintenance item so no need to check. Just go ahead a swap em out, it's time. May as well check the gimbal bearing while you are doing that work too.

Post your engine/drive questions in the I/O section. I haven't seen much engine advice given out in the Starcraft or restoration sections.

FYI: I checked the bellows tonight since I had to run by my buddy's place where I keep my toys...

Sure enough the upper bellow is torn. The lower one looks fine. I imagine I have to drop the lower unit to change them? I will change both once I figure out where I can get them from. Thanks for the heads up guys!

First I have to finish the new garage so I have somewhere to work...

Not bad for a weekends worth of work with a rookie build team. It is 30'x50'. We have made progress since this photo. All the framing is done, three walls are up and the roof is next. Then we can get the 200amp panel set and service hooked up.

Whoops! Wrong picture... That is my motivation to get the boat in the water. My daughter, and ... lets call her a boat buddy. :D

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

So I got the boat to start last night and it runs OK... Not great but, OK. I need to figure out the best way to clean out the fuel tanks and I need a replacement fuel filler hose along with a few other pieces. Hopefully I can figure out how to change the bellows without loosing my mind. It looks like quite a trick is involved. I also still need to replace the impeller. Once I do those things then I think it will be ready for it's first test run.

I say that but I need to fix the trailer lights and do something with the winch too... Oh yes, tires... It needs trailer tires too. The list is never ending so it seems.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Well, it pains me to update this thread...

I haven't touched the boat since last fall. I blew the tranny on my truck in November which sucked up all funds I had set aside for boat parts. Then in January I lost my contract at work and overnight, with no warning I was unemployed. Luckily in April I found a new company and have been running like crazy ever since.

I hope to work on it this winter and be ready to splash in the spring. I will start a restoration thread once I get it in the garage and promise to take plenty of pics.

Mike, after a long break I'm also back on iboats. Nice boat you have there. If you read thru my Sunchief restoration thread you'll find links and names of most of the folks you need to purchase parts and misc stuff you need for this boat.
Sierra Marine are the folks who make most of the replacement parts for your engine and outdrive including the electronic ignition conversion kit. Here's the link..
http://www.teleflexmarine.com/products/engine-and-drive-parts/
Iboats also sells lots of stuff that you can use.
Couple things to remember. You should always use lead additive since your head is pre hardened valves-I learned this one the hard way. Make sure you swap out the impeller whether you get circulation using the muffs or not before you launch the boat.
Good luck with this boat it's a good one.....
