Forming is about the only option....windshield are the hardest part of boat restores to find.

Well got the bulk of the rotted floor out tonight.

Seems kind of odd that the center stringer does not tie into the bilge box

No foam either. I guess it was not required in 1968

For the hell of it, I drilled 3 test test holes in the transom.

Once I drilled each hole, water started coming out :)

Got the stand built and motor off today:

Then got the rub rail off and got the rear part of the cap/splashwell off in prep for removing the rotten transom:

Looks like you're ready for some grinding.

Yup :)

I started a little last night but started getting eaten alive by the mosquitoes :(

The 24 grit disk on the 4.5" angle grinder goes through that stuff pretty quick  so I will need to be mindful when I continue grinding.

Yes it does, you only need to grind enough to get down to good fiberglass and make sure all the old wood is gone. Try to keep it as flat as you can.

When you removed the rear part of the cap, was their a factory seam or did you have to cut it? I have a 67 Glassmaster and am worried that I too need to do transom repairs.

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

First I removed the rubrail and transom splashwell cap.
I then made sure there were no wires or anything like that, then cut it with a sawzall using a 24teeth per inch bi-metal blade.

It did take a bit after that as the seem between the cap and the hull has a few layers of glass to cut through with a right angle air cutter. Also a nail-bar and hammer helped with the final separation of the back part of the cap and hull after the cuts were made.

I figure I will join the back part of the cap to the rest with a layer of CSM and a layer or two of 1708 on the inside and a few layers of CSM on the top when it's is time to put it back together.

Did a little more cutting and grinding in the bow today:

after:

Also took a bunch of pics and measurements before I start cutting/ pulling out the stringers.

Well got the boat covered and driveway picked up in prep for Irene:

However before that, I got the slab of Swiss cheese that is the splashwell, ground down as I figure I will just fill in all the cable holes with layers of CSM and 1708 and re-drill in the right place/s when the time comes:

Boy those 24 grit disks on the grinder sure move some product.... quickly. I didn't keep it moving fast enough in the corner:

That's it for now. Going to get back to scratching my forearms where the coveralls did not seal ;)

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

I was thinking a bit ahead today and was wondering what you all thought of mounting a 12 gal gas tank in the bow (like what Micks110 did on his AT restore)?

I will probably have 2 batteries in the stern and was thinking that having the 12 gal in the bow might help balance the weight a bit instead of 2 6 gal portables in the stern with the batteries

I'm open to any feedback.

Thank you
