Hello all. I have recently acquired a 1968 20HP Jonson outboard long shaft motor. It seems to be in decent condition, but it is missing the kill/stop switch on the front of the motor. I have searched and searched and can't seem to find the button and/or switch online that would plug into the empty space labeled "stop switch". Does anyone have a picture of their switch they can send me or help me locate and purchase one? The motor fired right up for me this weekend when testing it out but once its running I have no way to turn it off. Please help. Thanks.

I used to have the same motor with the same problem. The easy solution is to choke the motor to stop it. It works, but may prevent you from immediately restarting the motor.

Thanks eavega, that was a quick response. I'll try that next time. Better than what I was doing and pulling the plug wires  Did you ever look into getting yours fixed? If so, how much was it? Its weird, all the wiring and main part of the switch seem to be there, it really just looks like it is missing the plug. How can I upload a picture to show you?

You can replace the switch from OMC for ~$50. Or better...replace with a Sea-Dog combination kill switch with lanyard.

The stop button can be pushed when the lanyard is still attached to turn off the motor - some other aftermarket units do not have this feature.
They cost ~$10 here on iboats. This is what we use in the shop. Connects to the 2 wire you have there now. And and has both normally open and normally closed terminals.

Edit: In the meantime you may want to turn down your idle speed to the point where your motor stalls. You can also add the choke to the process as noted above. Just an fyi - some motors when choked don't shut down, they just run like DooDoo. Putting the motor in gear can also help to shut it down - in concert with the aforementioned.

Of course, order the switch and be done (and upgraded) in 3 days.

Good Luck!

The kill switch is nothing more than a momentary switch with a rubber bulb to make it water proof. I just put one on my 8 hp Johnson, it cost me $8.00 at a local hardware store, they are also refered to as starter switches. the one I bought came complete with the rubber bulb on it. If you are in Canada, go to Princess Auto to get one.

Now - don't forget to post back with the solution you chose and how it worked out. This way the next guy will have the answer without having to ask.

Good Luck!

Just a quick note and thought. The motor is set up with a starter, but I don't see an external starter switch. When I started it up last weekend I used the pull start. Would a universal stop switch work with this application? Here is a picture of the empty space where the plug would go. I'll take some more pictures of inside the motor too if you think it would help, but will have to do that later today.View attachment 112470

yep, a momentary switch will work for a Start button as well.

HI easy-boatin. I have a '66 20hp I just installed a lanyard kill switch on. I've used them several times on my vintage OMC motors and they work great. Just run one wire to each set of points then to the terminals on the switch and that's it. Takes about 30 min max. Search the forums for "kill switch" and you'll find tons of other posts. Holler if you get stuck.

Here's a pic of one on my '61 10 hp. They work both as a push button kill switch and/or when the lanyard is removed.
