Hi, guys. This is my first post on the forum and I hate for my first topic to be asking for help, but here goes. I recently bought a '67 model Evinrude 9.5hp outboard that runs like a sewing machine, but the upper engine mount is broken. I have located replacement parts and have a repair manual, but was wondering if any of you guys have ever replaced this mount. I'm a pretty good mechanic (can rebuild carbs, lawn mower engines, etc.), I've heard from some that this is a real pain, but they've never said why and I don't want to bite off more than I can chew on this. Are there any special tools or techniques that you can clue me in on to make this as painless as possible?

Thanks in advance.

I am too doing this repair on my 9.9 check out http://leeroysramblings.com/
it has a large artical on the 9.9 which is similar. the ease of repair will depend on how much saltwater the motor has seen. I only had to use my hammer style impact on the top 2 Philips screws. havent gotten to much further than cracking all the 6 lower bolts,2 screws and 3 motor mounts cracked.

I have replaced the motor mount that you are referring to, and it was a fairly involved process. You need to remove the two sides of the clamshell motor housing. Lots of bolts. Take some pictures before beginning. Seems like getting everything lined up to go back together was a bit fun too.

Talked to him today. Says he doesn't have any, but can order new ones. Guess I'll just grab the repair manual and dive in. The wife's gonna be out of town next week so that should give me plenty of time!

If your fairly mechanically inclined you can do it it. Get the manual and dive in. Its just time consuming, lots of parts to be removed.

Got into it this afternoon. I had the power head pulled in an hour. I took LOTS of pictures, but it wasn't rocket science. You can also short cut some of the instructions such as removing the carburetor and the magneto armature. I think that re-assembly is gonna be the more difficult part!

There is no rocket science involved. There is however, a lot of patience, penetrating oil and a blow torch involved. Don't force anything. If you can still get out there, douse all the nuts and bolts that have to come loose in penetrating oil and repeat this first thing in the morning. Then have breakfast.
Now try to loosen the bolts but do not force them. If they won't budge, use the torch and try again. Having to drill out a broken bolt sucks.

I actually didn't have any problems removing any of the bolts. Now I'm just waiting on parts to arrive and cleaning up what I have disassembled.

Next is the lower unit. Anybody have any experience replacing the prop shaft seals? It appears that mine is leaking......

You don't even have to take off the lower unit to do that, but doing it on the work bench IS easier.
While the lower unit is still attached, drain the oil and let it sit until it is all out. Then remove the lower unit. (six bolts and shift rod).
Remove the prop and check the shear pin.Loosen the six bolts that hold the lower part of the skeg. If it does not come of,just give it a wack with a rubber hammer. Now the lower unit gear shaft should just come out. Save the rubber spaghetti string if you can. Check which direction the open side of the prop shaft seal is facing, take the prop seal off and check the shaft for wear. there is probably only one seal on there ,but if the shaft is a bit worn put 2 new ones on, the open sides facing towards the water and the other towards the oil (back to back). Now use some of that brown evinrude goop stuff on the o-ring and the spaghetti seal and put everything back together.
good luck
