1966 Johnson 60 HP help

I swapped lower units out on my 66 60hp. I used a 59 lower unit on my 60 everything looks the same and bolts up. The lower unit works great the water pump pumps all kind of water and the lower unit goes in to gear great. Heres my problem. I am getting exhaust fumes into the engine cover and the motor will not stay running. I had no problems like this before. I have a manual and cannot find anything that i did wrong. Any ideas?

Hmmmm, that's bizarre! Are you getting what seems like a normal amount of exhaust exiting under water? Any chance a mouse or something made a nest in the replacement lower units exhaust outlet? It seems like it has to be plugged with something. Good luck!
